“A little bit musty”
Reviewed March 6, 2017 for a stay in January 2017

The location is great, with easy access to Volcano and Hilo. The area is very quiet (except for the Coqui Frogs at night and the chickens in the morning), There were some serious problems on arrival. The freezer door was ajar and due to the humidity (which we expected) there was a huge mildew problem in and around the open freezer door and the entire bungalow had a VERY strong mildew smell, which lasted all through our stay and required regular spraying of Lysol air freshener.

We want to reply to this reviewer! This guest called us when they arrived to The Hideaway and let us know of the freezer door problem, and the mildew smell. It was late in the evening when they called. We contacted our cleaning company that night, and they went to The Hideaway the next morning to clean the mildew and check to see why the freezer door was open. They reported that there was a water bottle in the freezer which keep the door ajar. They completely cleaned the freezer and the door of mildew. We question the review of this guest when they say the mildew smell was very strong and lasted through out there stay. We arrived at The Hideaway after this guest checked out and there was no evidence of what this guest complained about. This review came to us two months after they checked out. We have contacted TripAdvisor to object to this review as this guest failed to mention the corrective action we took, and yet complained that the smell lasted their whole trip. We know it did not!!!

“Relaxation at its peak.”
Reviewed February 19, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

We loved everything about our stsy at the Hideaway. And mind you, the name fits well. You wouls never know this little spot in paradise existed if you were not given instructions. The tin roof on both the cottage and the lani made for some very relaxing days and one didn't really mind skipping the beach in order to enjoy the solitude. The propery was clean and well stocked with everything anyone could want to make themselves at home. A word of warning though... DO NOT attempt to take the back roads. You will damage your rental car. It took us 2 hours to simply reach a point where we had no choice but to turn around. Then one person had to walk and give detailed instructions while the other drove. 5 mph is too fast for these roads. Go out the same way you arrived. Don't be adventurous. Overall, definitely a cottsge we'd love to visit again.

Aloha and Thank you for your review. We have tried very hard to make The Hideaway a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy your vacation! Sorry to hear you went exploring the back roads of Fern Acres. When the pavement ends....turn around!!! We hope that you enjoyed your time on The Volcano!!! Hope to have you as guests again! Mahalo

“Great Place to Stay on the Big Island”

Our Hawaiian Hideaway was a great place to stay during March of 2016. The house is in an agricultural/residential area away from the mayhem of Kona or Hilo. Everything was as advertised with clear instructions, etc.
The house itself is small but roomy with everything needed. Coqui frogs sing the house to sleep and roosters wake it up every day. 20 minutes to Volcanoes NP, 30 minutes to Hilo, about 2 hours to Kona depending on traffic.

“Quiet”

This was a wonderful place to stay for a week in the Mountain View/Puna/Hilo area. Very quiet and secluded. House was perfect, as advertized. Linda and Bob are just a phone call away if needed. But everything is there already (although couldn't find a small coffee bean grinder). The front porch is a great place to have breakfast, etc. This place is a few miles off the highway and is not fun driving to in the dark if you're tired at the end of the day, but we liked it once we were there. It's a very cozy, nice place for a couple, and the price is right/fair. Once again, I would like to thank Linda for being so nice and good with communication, both by email and phone.
Thankyou!

“Hidden Away Indeed”

"Our Hawaiian Hideaway" is a few miles off the main highway, in the Fern Acres subdivision, so it surely is hidden away. The cottage itself was very cozy and well appointed, the owners (Bob and Linda) have even taken care to label many of the light switches and leave notes / suggestions about the place (I forget what some of the switches in my place do, so this touch was much appreciated). Our favorite aspect of the Hideaway is the huge screened in porch, we spent a lot of our time out there. At night, the coqui frog calls were quite loud, kind of cute at first but after hours and hours, it was less so (but didn't detract from the visit). We happened to arrive the day before Hurricane Iselle did, and unfortunately spent most of our visit with no power and no water. So that was an experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed this rental. It was very clean, well appointed and centrally located between Hilo and Volcanoes National Park- about 25 minutes to either. WiFi was automatic...no log-on necessary. . Everything was well labeled and easy to find. Instructions to find the rental and gain entry were precise (A civic address would help those using a GPS device). Bed was very comfortable. The lanai was very nice.

“really hideaway”

we had difficulties finding the HIDEaway, because we trusted google maps.... only trust in what the owner writes and so you will find it without problems.....
once here, everything was as we expected and still a bit better. everything you really need is here (except a large bed, we are used to have one, so this is not a reproach)
get asleep with the chants of the coqui frogs is (fos us) fantastic. we really prefer this sound instead of a highway, loud neighbour's TV or people step dancing on your head in the appartement above...) when the frogs stop the roosters in the woods begin, when they stop, the birds begin to sing..... the sounds of the jungle, NOT New York City.... for every nature lover PARADISE! We love especially the fully equipped kitchen and the perfect working wi-fi to write our blog daily without going to a internet café. for us swisses where everythibng is close, driving half an hour to the national park seems a bit long, but now we are here in BIG island....and gas is so cheap (too cheap to teach people just to make working their engine when the car is moving....) another thing I would buy immediately if the house were mine: a shower to take in my hand, (not fixed to a wall) but the pressure is good and warm water also comes good, you might need it when visiting in winter al we are doing right now. WE WOULD COME BACK, YES, WE WOULD

Aloha Frank & Susi,
We hope you enjoyed your stay.
Thank you for leaving us a nice review on FlipKey.
We like your idea of adding a hand shower, and will do so on our next visit. Sorry we do not have a King Bed, but we hope you still found it a comfortable bed to get a good night sleep. We also enjoy all of the sounds of nature at the Hideaway.
We look forward to reading your blog about your travels.
We wish you all the best and safe travels in the future.
Mahalo,
Bob & Linda
