“Fern Forest Retreat No Ka Oi (is the BEST!”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

If you stay here once, you’ll wonder why you would ever stay anywhere else. We’ve stayed in several places in and around Volcano over the years to be near the Park, and we’ve never been disappointed; all have been very good. But this one stands above the rest mainly because of Lenny and his understanding of guests’ needs, from privacy to friendliness to all of the little “extras” that make this feel like such a welcoming and comfortable place to be. If anyone was born to be the host of a B&B or guest house, Lenny is the one. The fresh fruit and “Mom’s” breads every morning are wonderful; this garden in the rainforest is beautiful; the attention to detail is amazing. If it’s full, you’ll be OK elsewhere, but when we come back, we’ll be back here again.

This is a five star B&B, better than the best hotels you’ll find on Hawaii. It’s a short drive from the Volcanoes National Park, so this is a great place to stay a few days in the area. It’s somewhat hidden at the end of the unpaved road, so make sure you write down the directions that Lenny will give you. The GPS might take you around in circles. Also try to check in before sun-down the first night so you’ll know where you are going. Unfortunately it was pretty rainy during our stay, we didn’t get to enjoy the garden outside. But the foliage is gorgeous, it really creates a really relaxing environment. I believe that there are several suites on the property, Lenny will write your name for the one assigned to you. He came and greeted us as soon as we pulled up and even helped us with our luggage. He planned everything to the smallest detail to make sure our stay was pleasant, from trail guides, to menus for local restaurants, down to flashlights and binoculars if we needed. He even left us fresh fruits, cereal, coffee, milk and juice for every morning. The suite was spacious and spotless, you can tell that a lot of time was spent in decorating the rooms. It does get cold at night, but we found a portable heater in the closet so it was fine. The only thing that was a little off at this place was the low water pressure in the shower and sink. Otherwise, everything else was great. It’s no wonder why everyone gives this place great reviews because it’s all true!

Room Tip: Make sure you use Lenny's directions to find the retreat.

the second stop of our hawaii adventure was the big island of hawaii. we chose to stay near hawaii volcanos national park. the volcano fern forest retreat fit the bill. it is a lovely, well appointed b&b at the edge of the rain forest. the surroundings are gorgeous. it is very secluded and quiet - at the end of a mile paved, and 1/3 mile unpaved rutted dirt road. after our initial trepidation about driving it, we got used to it and were fine (just go slowly).

there is a big king bed, couch, tables and chairs, fireplace and kitchenette. cereals, milk and juice are provided, and every day fresh fruit and banana breads appear. we chose to have the cereal before we left and carry the bread and fruit with us for lunch or snack - this was a big savings for our meal budget!

the retreat is just a few minutes from the national park, the town of volcano, and about 45 minutes to hilo and the airport.

our host, lenny, the owner is a delight - very friendly and helpful, providing maps, brochures, binoculars, umbrellas, flashlights, etc. there was even a sign out front greeting us upon our arrival.

i would definitely recommend this b&b.

Room Tip: when you drive in, take route 11 from hilo, go past the orchid center and make a left onto alii kane...

Forget about the high rise and touristy strips of Hilo or other resorts. This charming B&B is nestled in the rain forest just 7 miles from the entrance to Volcano National Park and only 23 miles from Hilo. The location is perfect and the accommodation is outstanding so much so that we didn't want to leave, had to force ourselves to get in the car and go to see the volcanoes.
Lenny has thought of everything in Fern Cottage, all the little extras eg.cool box and picnic plates, torches, binoculars and the room itself is huge with a kitchenette and really good quality furnishings, plush towels etc.
There is a charcoal barbecue kettle so we were able to cook our evening meal and sit in the Lanai and take in the rain forest.
Lenny went out of his way to make sure we had all we needed but he wasn't in the way. The breakfast is all you would want, fruit, cereals, juice and then there is the Banana Cake.
Fantastic stop wish we had longer.

Staying here was like a page out of a fairy tale book. In the middle of the fast rainforest lies a romantic getaway surrounded by a beautiful garden. Celebrating our 30th Anniversary in this peaceful setting beats Kauilua- Kona's busy fast life hands down. Our next trip to The Big Island will be coordinated around openings here instead of an open timeshare resort week.

What a great place to go back to after a long day exploring the island. Lenny was extremely sweet and helpful. The room was impeccably clean, I loved that he thought of EVERYTHING you might possibly need. Umbrellas, snorkel gear, binoculars, flashlights. Great breakfast. The couch also pulls out into a bed. We had thee ppl and it was comfortable. Closet full of breakfast cereals, well stocked fridge with juice, yummy bread for breakfast. Overall a very wonderful experience. Be sure to bring a GPS though, very hard to navigate the area without one.

What a quiet little getaway from all the hotels and resorts in Hawaii. This B&B is close to Volcanoes National Park without all the tourists being right next door. Perfect for a special occasion (our anniversary trip) or just recharging on your Hawaiian vacation. The room is beautifully decorated. Lenny, the owner, is awesome and will help with whatever questions you may need answered. The breakfast is delightful: fresh Hawaiian fruit and homemade nut breads everyday along with cereals, milk, juice and water. You are not going to find many places like this one - private, yet with a personal touch from someone who cares about the tourists. And it is super clean! Thanks, Lenny. We hope to visit again.
