“Best Crater Rim Cabin ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2011

Jim and Barry are wonderful hosts. The cabin offered a ton and lacked nothing. We felt like someone handed us the keys to their well stocked home. We couldn't find a thing out of place or a single thing that could be improved upon. The only possible drawback is that you might not want to leave the cabin to go enjoy the island. But if you do, you'll have a great place to come home to. We were also very pleasantly surprised by the great restaurants nearby.

We stayed in this gem of a B&B for 4 days in Dec 2010 while exploring Volcano National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Run by two gentlemen who live in the house next door (a professional photographer and a scientist), this 900 sq ft cabin was a delight to call "home" for our stay. Beautifully constructed in the early 1900s with lots of gorgeous hardwoods, the cabin is surrounded by tree ferns, koa trees, camellias and tropical shrubs. It features a full kitchen, a stocked refrigerator, large bathroom with abundance of hot water, a living room with fire place and futon, and a master-bedroom with king-sized bed outfitted with electric blankets.

It was spotless - even the windows were pefrectly clean. In addition to the breakfast basics provided to create our own brunches, the kitchen had coffees, teas, home-made jam, locally grown honey, a variety of spices and condiments, and juices.

The cozy living room had a fire place (on at the flick of a switch) for warmth and ambience. There were dozens of history, geology, and photography books, activity guidebooks, magazines, menus and brochures on activities and restaurants in and around the town of Volcano (2 miles away). Hosts Jim and Barry were very knowledgeable about what to do, where to go, rating how difficult or easy hikes were, providing restaurant recommendations, side-trips worthy of consideration, etc. They have mastered the rare skill of welcoming guests like cherished family members returning after a long absence. As another guest put into the journal on the cabin's dining table, they offer personal hospitality, not corporate hotel functionality.

The cabin is near the Volcano golf course so there is no traffic noise or lights to disturb you at night. It is about 1.5 miles from the entrance to Volcano National Park. This is a hugely wonderful thing. Most visitors are staying in the resort hotels along the Kona coast, which are a 2-3 hour drive away from the national park. As the best viewing of lava is after dark, it makes for a long and winding drive along narrow roads to return to one's hotel. But if you stay at the Crater Rim Cabin, you're back from lava viewing in only a few minutes. Use wi-fi to monitor the USGS site for immediate information on where the lava has just appeared and how fast it is flowing. The town of Hilo is about 45 minutes away, and the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut factory is located there.

There are many B&Bs in Volcano, but none are as warm, cozy, comfortably-furnished and superbly hosted as the Crater Rim Cabin. Candles, fresh bouquets of flowers, a warm fire, read-a-book/take-a-book shelf, DVDs and a player, fresh towels every day, and free parking. What more could anyone want? There is much to do here, so plan at least 3 nights or you'll leave wishing you had stayed more than the 1 or 2 you booked. Before you leave, asked Barry & Jim to show you the wonderful items they have for sale in their gift shop, featuring Tutu-Nene products (quilted goods using beautiful Hawaiian fabrics) and posters/post-cards of Jim's spectacular volcano photography (J.D.Griggs).

We cannot rave enough about the Crater Rim Cabin and the hospitality of the owners (Jim and Barry). When we arrived, we were greeted with a cute welcome sign (thank you, Jim!), pointing us in the direction of the parking area and the cabin.

We were in awe when we opened the door of the cabin. Barry had started a fire and lit some candles, a peaceful Enya CD was playing in the background and Barry had just cleaned every crevass of the cabin. I have never seen a place so clean and it smelled so fresh because he had just steam cleaned the wood floors! He had even turned on the electric blanket for our bed, which was such a nice extra touch.

Architecturally, this cabin is stunning. There are unique windows (transome, stained glass, "sky" lights, etc.) throughout, allowing the mystical beauty and light of the surrounding gardens to shine through. The cabin is constructed of wide planks of redwood, which gives this cabin an incredibly cozy feeling.

We were pleasantly surprised, too, that Barry had stocked our kitchen with the essentials. We had freshly ground Starbucks coffee (including decaf!), half and half, milk, sugar and sweetners, various breakfast cereals, fresh bread, eggs, butter, homemade honey and jam and fruit! And I have to give them kudos for the chocolate-covered macadamia nuts they gave us. Those did not last very long.

Perhaps my favorite part was when I opened the back door in our bedroom that leads to the gardens. I felt like I had stepped into a fairy tale. Jim and Barry have the most beautifully manicured gardens and there are a variety of birds, plants and flowers that you can observe. I wish the smell and sounds of this place could fully come through in this review, but you'll just have to visit Crater Rim to experience it.

We were thrilled with the location...just 2 miles from the entrance to Volcano National Park. It was perfectly situated from the village of Volcano, as well. Jim and Barry have an abundance of reading material, brochures and information regarding the park and attractions around the area. Barry gave us some great tips for heading to Puna so that we could try and see the current lava flow. They were both just so helpful and accommodating to make sure we had absolutely everything we needed.

I must mention their kitty, Olivia. My husband and I were missing our 5-month old kittens, but were happy to see Ms. Olivia roaming the grounds. She was very friendly and let me brush her at night. She was just another bonus.

Our 1st impression of the Crater Rim Cabin and our 2 days there are memories that will stay with us forever. We were literally sad to leave this place and go back to the hectic daily grind that was awaiting us back on the mainland. We will definitely consider the Crater Rim Cabin a place to "reset" and escape from the hustle and bustle. What a magical place! This is the paradise we were searching for in Hawai'l.

It was wet and rainy when we found this retreat - a blissful place snuggled into rainforest foliage just minutes from the National park. It wasn’t an easy find in the dark and rainy weather (take the road to the right just before you get to the golf course) but the next morning, after sleeping fitfully in the warm, firm bed it was everything we hoped for. Crater Rim Cabin is just outside of the Volcanoes National Park and I mean JUST outside - the backyard ends at the park boundary!

The Crater Rim cabin truly has everything we needed. It’s immaculately clean (they even steam clean the wood floors between visits, to keep any ‘pests’ at bay from other hotels), it’s perfect for two people and the kitchen has enough breakfast supplies to last days. The food supplied for breakfast is delicious - we tried to search for the bread when we returned home it was so good but there is also freshly ground coffee for the a.m. jolt and fresh fruit that makes your mouth water.

Barry and Jim were fantastic hosts. We stayed for 4 nights and didn't even see them until the 3rd day. They came while we were out to clean and leave fresh supplies, but otherwise, we were left alone, which was quite lovely, as we were looking to disappear from the world for a while. We were able to stay connected with the strong, wireless internet connection in the cabin though, when we needed to.

The information, provided in the cabin, on the surrounding area proved very useful and the DVDs were great to watch to get you pumped and help you understand what you were looking at, because without it, it can be overwhelming. Note: There is no television (no cable) so if you stay more than a night or two, bring along a DVD of your own, or rent from the general store in Volcano Village. Also, hit Foodland on Hwy 11 before venturing out as the Volcano Village General Store is pricey and limited with their supplies. Foodland is a 30 min drive from the cabin, which is really the only reason we gave the location 4/5 stars... it's just a drive to get into town or to reasonable groceries. But once at the cabin, it had everything we needed.

I'd definitely recommend this cabin if you want seclusion, peace, be able to hit the trails or just view the steam vents and craters and still be close by. Bring a good book, some good wine, some food and your sweetie and you will be golden.

Barry and Jim define hospitality! The cabin is immaculate and the location is beautiful and can't be beat for convenience either! We used this as the base for our explorations in Volcano -- and it was so convenient that we would just "run home" for lunch! If we were truly budget-minded, we could have made our own dinners (but hey -- it's vacation and there were some great restaurants in Volcano!).

The cabin was perfect for us, and it's filled with charming furnishings -- AND loads of local activity info. Barry is a terrific resource about local activities and restaurants. The entire property is beautiful -- forest on one side and an amazing flower garden on the other!

The only bad part was leaving! Really. My husband wanted to know if Barry thought the people coming after us would mind if we just stayed and slept on futon in the living room!

My Wife and I spent two wonderful nights at the Crater Rim Cabin on the recommendation of our daughter, who stayed there last year. The cabin brought me back to the forties, but with modern conveniences and comfort. We enjoyed walking the grounds and especially the tour of the flower garden that host Barry gave us. The bed was very comfortable and the rooms had beautiful floral bouquets. The kitchen was well stocked and served our every need. We enjoyed the sound of birds interrupting the quiet serenity.
Thanks to Jim and Barry!

Crater Rim Cabin was so much more than we expected...the flora and fauna surrounding the grounds, the cleanliness and hominess of the cabin, the chocolate covered macadamia nuts, the breakfast food and fruit in the kitchen...local honey and homemade jam, the gas fireplace, and welcomed turned-on electric blanket. Most of all, we were thrilled with our hosts' friendliness and williness to share knowledge. You are the best, Barry and Jim!
