“simple quiet cabin right next to Volcanoes National Park”

The proprietor Katheryn was very kind and took time to talk to us about Volcano Villiage and the park. She had good tips and lots of interesting resource material that we found very useful.

Be aware that there are not a lot of food options in the villiage and some of those are only open for lunch. Plan on using the kitchen at the cabin for some meals.

Kate's cottages are wonderful and have everything like home. We also love the lush garden and lanai for a rest. Owner Kathryn is so thoughtful in all details. Her high standard in the supplies - organic cereals, fair trade products, beautiful tea set and pottery bowls. I like Kathryn cares about ecosystem, she even put a compost bin in each cottage. Love it, hope we could go back soon.

While planning our Big Island vacation, we had planned to stay in Hilo and drive to Volcanoes National Park for sightseeing. But then we discovered the little village of Volcano, just a few minutes outside the park entrance. What a find!! This is the way to visit Volcanoes NP! And among the B&Bs there, I believe Volcano Places is the best!

We stayed in Kahi Malu, a 2 room house with kitchen, lanai, living room and every amenity you could reasonably want! Kathryn was attentive, gracious, full of information and suggestions and the best host you could hope for. The house had comfortable beds with warmers, an ample supply of DVDs (both entertainment titles and documentaries about the volcanoes and recent eruptions), a fully stocked kitchen with excellent breakfast cereals, maps, flashlights and even gloves for the truly serious lava hikers! We really enjoyed sitting on the lanai out back in the middle of the rainforest eating a delicious breakfast while listening to the variety of birds singing in the trees. Kathryn has made a real effort to be environmentally and health conscious in her choice of food that she provides in the house and the way she runs it (for example, there is a water purifier system in the kitchen to fill your water bottles from). Take advantage of her maps and local knowledge, she is a real treasure for exploring Volcanoes NP.

One tip -- bring your milk from Hilo. It costs roughly $10/gallon in the convenience store in Volcano Village. Kathryn provides good directions to the supermarkets in Hilo and Kona before your trip so pay heed and follow them!

We stayed for two nights at Kahi Malu and one of our biggest regrets from our trip to Hawaii is that we didn't get to stay here longer! The rooms exceeded our expectations and Kathryn was a fantastic host. She is passionate about the island and we loved learning from her about the geography, geology, animals, plants, history, and language. We loved Volcano National Park and the town of Volcano (if you are going to be there on Sunday, ask Kathryn for suggestions at the Farmers' Market) and we have promised ourselves that we will be back to Volcano Places for a longer stay in the not too distant future!

A big thankyou to Kathryn who has provided us with a home away from home in the rainforest. In the bungalow there is everything you will need . My husband and I spent 7 days here to thoroughly explore Volcano National Park. We couldn't have choosen a better place to stay, it is 5 minutes from the gates of the park. After a day of hiking we could come back to a quiet ,comfortable and private bungalow. If you didnt feel like cooking there is a great Thai restaurant in town 2 minutes away. Groceries are easily picked up in Hilo coming from the airport and there are two small convenience stores in Volcano. Katheryn will gladly help you in finding things to see an do in and near Volcano. You are only 35 minutes from Hilo to all the city conveniences if you like that.
We where in Hawaii for 30 days and visited 3 of the islands and we saw many beautiful places, but without a doubt Volcano Park was our favorite place and Volcano Places out favorite place we stayed.
Thankyou Katheryn for the chance for Henri and I to experience your part of heaven, we will always remember this place and can highly recommend your bungalow.

My family and I stayed at Kate's Cottage for two nights during a week-long trip to the Big Island in early April and absolutely loved it. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

The cottage is tucked away in a very quiet, private location surrounded by lush rainforest. Inside, there is everything that you could possibly want or need. A very comfortable bed (the sofa bed was comfortable too), a well-stocked and equipped kitchen, and a range of books, DVDs, CDs etc. There is also a very private covered outside dining / living area ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sounds of the forest.

Kathryn was a great host too - full of information and very welcoming but also respectful of our space and privacy. It's an over-used phrase but Kate's Cottage really is a home away from home.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at Kates Cottage and have nothing but positives to say. It was clean, comfortable, quiet and private. The kitchen was stocked with all kinds of breakfast cereal, a choice of coffees, and basic cooking supplies if you chose to cook there. And we were greeted by a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts! The lanai opened onto lush treeferns and was a perfect place for morning coffee and evening wine. There were also guidebooks, umbrellas, flashlights, and maps to help with your volcano visit. Kathryn was very helpful answering questions but also gave you privacy. It was just a couple of miles away from Volcanoes National Park and Volcano village. By the way, try out Lava Rock restaurant in Volcano. It's reasonably priced with good food and friendly people. We hope to visit all of this again!
