“Perfect place to stay in VNP”

We stayed at the Bungalow in March 2013. For 2 adults + 2 kids - the bungalow was perfect. Kate stopped by and explained everything about the bungalow. The lanai was beautiful, bungalow was stocked with extra blankets and everything. It helped to stay in the village and not in Hilo as we could start our day early and go to the park. We even went to the farmers market in volcano village. Loved every bit of our stay there. We have not stayed in any other place there - but I doubt I would have gotten such personalised information anywhere.

The Wright Place is just that -a right place to stay in Volcano. Kathryn is a lovely manager who provided very useful information and made sure we had everything we needed. The place was well furnished, cosy and fully equipped. The bed was most comfortable, thick and the bedding/ linen was of excellent quality. A nice touch was the box of chocolates that Kathryn left for us. Being in amongst the lush forest was great. Slept well and the night trip into the park was a highlight.

If you stay In Volcano, this is the place to stay. Recommend staying at least 2 nights to see the park.

A tip - to eat the Kealeu Lodge resturant, make sure you book in advance.

Both the town and the cottage (Nohea) are wonderful. Katheryn is an especially gracious and conscientious host and the cottage is beautiful, comfortable, very well equipped and located very near HVNP. We can't wait to stay here again. By far, my favorite place I have stayed on all of the islands.

Just spent 4 nights in Kate's Cottage, and like the other reviews I found it near perfect. Beautiful timber studio cottage with full kitchen, comfortable, warm (gets cold here!) lovely host Kathyn, comfortable king bed, in a very quiet forest setting. Just a pleasure to come back to after exploring Kilauea which is only 10 mins away. Highly recommend. Only minor fault is the wi fi is a bit hit and miss, and the AT &T reception only just works - neither faults of the accommodation provider. But that aside, gorgeous!

This is a tough review to write because I do concur with all other reviewers that Volcano Village is a special place with great people that care very much about the area, the park, and are very gracious in sharing that experience with visitors.

I would also agree that spending at least a few nights 2-3 in the Village really allows you to have time to explore the park and volcano and I'm glad we made that choice, regardless. We recognized up front that this was a family run business and we were completely fine with the reservation process, getting directions and checking in. We have a lot of experience with vacation rentals and we certainly were expecting and looking forward to local living. Kate was more than welcoming upon our arrival as all other reviewers have indicated.

Our problem with our stay was the cottage itself. It did not take but a few minutes inside to feel like something wasn't quite right. There were small fans running on the floors of each room and as we started to look closer at the ceilings and walls, we could see many places where mold was either actively growing or painted over. This was in the bedroom, the living room and very active mold all over the ceiling of the bathroom. In the living room, the ceiling was slightly bowed and cracked at the seam and it made us really wonder what was going on up there. The shower had mold all around the edges and was so unpleasant, we stayed out of it.

We were completely dismayed and even searched trip advisor the first night to see if anyone else had mentioned anything about mold. Just one couple.

We really had empathy for the owners and the tough conditions they are working under to keep out moisture in a rainforest setting. But at the same time, we thought to ourselves, all of the beautiful woodwork in the world does not change the fact that this structure has serious problems and yet its being rented out as a vacation rental.

It was uneasy, especially being worried about the air quality, and by the last night my oldest couged all night long. We left early the next morning and checked into another hotel on the Kona side just for the afternoon so that we could shower and rest before our long flight out that night.

I did take several pictures but I'm not uploading them at this time. I just hope that some remediation and improvements can be made that will make the cottage enjoyable for guests in the future.

This was definitely another travel lesson learned around the potential for unexpected conditions and we will really consider this experience when we look at potential trips to places with similar rainforest climates.

Having enjoyed our first stay last year so much, we returned again to Volcano, Hawaii to spend a full week in Volcano Places' Nohea cottage. Our high expectations were exceeded in every way. Half day trips down to Hilo or into HVNP provided all the exploring, exercise, novelty & scenery the region offers. Knowing our peaceful cottage awaited us when we tired made all the adventures even better. Nestled in a quiet spot in the upland rain forest, Nohea's self-contained luxury made us feel pampered. The fully equipped kitchen allowed us to enjoy quiet evenings with great meals prepared with the fruit, veggies & baked goods from area Farmers Markets & fresh fish from Hilo seafood markets. Add some wine and the cottage's hot tub and you'll wonder why anyone chooses to stay in large resorts when they visit the Big Island. This rental is a gem!

Room Tip: Volcano Places offers other rental cottages as well.

I stayed here with my girlfriend for 3 nights while we were visiting Volcano Natl. Park and Hilo. I consider myself very lucky to have snagged the Nohea cottage during our visit. The place was really perfect and Kathryn, the owner and manager, was extremely friendly and helpful.

It is larger than the pictures would make it out to be and comes with everything you could possibly want/need. I woke up every morning, fired up the gas fireplace to drive away the morning coolness, ground some complimentary local Ka'u coffee, and sat on the covered patio and just enjoyed being in the forest surrounded by ferns and mossy trees. Oh, and there are almost NO bugs here to bother you, even after we left the windows wide open all day. The cottage is also pretty secluded so you can't really see the neighboring structures unless you really try, and even then it's only from the front. The hot tub and porch are completely secluded. Nothing but peace, quiet, and some of the cleanest, freshest air I've experienced.

The bed was cozy, the kitchen stocked with everything you could want to make a meal or snack, and the hot tub is there to comfort you after a long day of hiking the Volcano. This was one of the best accommodations I've ever experienced anywhere.

The only downside is the town of Volcano itself. For whatever reason, there are NO good restaurants here (Yep, we went to all 4 restaurants in town during our stay and they were all underwhelming), despite the park being here and tourists in the area. There is also no grocery store, only an overpriced general store with the basics. Do yourself a favor and bring some groceries to make in Nohea's awesome kitchen. Some complimentary food is provided, like cereal, but for real meals you'll want to pack it in yourself.
