My husband and I stayed at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat for a few days during our honeymoon (in the forest house). This was hands down the best place I stayed on my honeymoon (or ever). The room was very romantic and comfortable. We loved the fireplace and the attention to detail. The cabin/cottage is located in the middle of a dense section of rainforest so although there are other cabins around it, it feels very private. To get around there are charming little footpaths. There is also a jacuzzi that's centrally located for your enjoyment. The owner showed us the other cabins and they were all great. It's true that the bed is not made every day, and that you do your own dishes. I think that this is not the place for people who want a high rise or commericial resort kind of feeling. This place has much more character than that and caters to people who want a genuine experience. The only down side for us was that we are continually looking for lodging like this when we travel and are usually disappointed.

We just returned from a 5-day stay at Volcano Rainforest Retreat. We stayed in the Forest House, which was a very neat design. Unfortunately, design was choosen over function. The kitchen sink served as the bathroom sink, as there was no room in the bathroom for a sink. This was not the best set-up.

The property itself is very nice and quiet, but the room had sheers on the windows, including one set that could not be closed. We felt that we were in a fishbowl. Additional problems we had included the fact that our bed was not made up each day and the dishes were not done. Out of frustration we ended up making the bed a couple of days and doing the dishes, just so the room would look decent when we returned that night. When paying full hotel prices ($140.00 per night), we expect the bed to be made each day. It is this lack of attention to detail that made our experience a two star.

By the way, the hotel requires full payment in advance. So everything was done in their favor. We suggest finding other places to stay, as the cost is too high for the quality and service provided.

Too bad there was so much to see at nearby Volcano Nat. Park because we would have loved to have spent more time in our cottage and surrounding gardens. The innkeepers are delightful and have created a real paradise with attention to details in our cottage such as a CD player with a substantial selection of relaxing CDs, incense, a selection of teas in addition to the requisite Kona coffee, a gas fireplace, flip-flops to wear around the gardens, robes, and more. Playful details also abound in the gardens where tasteful small statues surprise you at every turn. A very private, romantic place.
