If you like the feel of 'old Hawaii,' you'll enjoy the quiet and the quaint, tucked-into-the-stream-bank feeling at Our Place.
We stayed in the master Bedroom and found it quite comfortable. We were in Papaikou while looking for property to build on in Hilo, and Ouida Trahan was wonderfully welcoming and helpful with information about the town, its people and possible good locations to purchase land. She suggested activities, pretty drives, places to visit, and gave us a tour of her gardens.
Breakfast was good strong coffee, locally baked breads from Baker Tom's, granola and ripe papayas that grew right outside the window.
One note of caution: As with many areas on the wet side of the Big Island, be sure to bring insect repellent for the mosquitoes. Our Place is right at the edge of a pretty stream, and there are mosquitoes!
The price was right and Ouida's a great host, and we were pleased that Our Place was featured in Frommer's budget guide -- it's definitely a simple, clean, no-frills place that offers great value and an excellent central location for exploring Hilo and the Hamakua coast.
