Garvin and Laura are extremely friendly and hospitable.
We loved our stay at Island Goode's.
Our room was spacious, clean and furnished with taste and had a view of Hilo and the bay and banana plantation at the back.
The breakfast was very yummy with many different tropical fruit grown on their own farm.
We definitely recommend this B&B!

We stayed on the island for 8 days. We stayed 7 days in Kailua-Kona and 1 day in Hilo and stayed at Island Goode's while visiting the east side of the island. It is quite a beautiful property with lush landscaping. We visited Akaka Falls before checking in (the falls are very close), and were a little wet upon arrival. We were greeted warmly by Garvin upon our arrival. He walked us through the room, pointing out all of the amenities of the room, the property and surrounding area. I was surprised that a little styrofoam cooler was left in the room for guest use. I found this very thoughtful! The shower had shampoo/conditioner/body wash which smelled fantastic! Garvin and Laura also put together a booklet with local restaurants which was really helpful.
Laura then came in with some fresh flowers to make the room look even prettier!

We stayed in the Mauna Kea room (it has 2 rooms that shares a bathroom). The king bed was sooo comfortable! My mother in law also enjoyed her night's sleep in the other room. The breakfast the next day was out of this world. There was plenty of fresh fruit, bran muffins, biscotti, eggs, portuguese sausage, coffee and juice. I believe much of the fruit is grown on their property, and the baked goods were homemade as well. It was a delicious way to start our day.

The location is ideal - very close to Hilo, Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Volcano National Park. I would definitely stay here again!

My only regret is that we only stayed one night!

Room Tip: I don't think you can go wrong here!

I know the Big Island well and have stayed in fine hotels and friends' homes, one a couple of streets from the Goode's B & B. I've traded up to Island Goode's this time and enjoyed my hosts' warmth and generosity, wonderful accommodations and an unexpectedly carefree holiday. I rented the two room suite (one very comfortable excellent futon in the living room) and was so pleasantly surprised. The Goode's fresh homegrown fruit, juice, baked goods from their kitchen, really good coffee, delivered each night for a private leisurely breakfast or night snack exceeded my expectations and made my daughter, a total homebody, feel exceptionally comfortable. Don't look elsewhere. Trust me--I've been to what I thought was the best but now regard as the rest. Island Goode's is the best place on the east side of the island. Thank you for a great stay.

Room Tip: For a more private stay, go for the suites next door on the second floor

We stayed at Island Goode's for a couple of nights in June. It was a great find, thanks to all the reviews on TA.

It's a traditional style b&b with just two rooms (although they will soon be extending into an adjoining property), and we were well looked after throughout our stay.

Garvin and Laura were really friendly and gave us great recommendations for restaurants and trips. The room (Hilo Bay) was large, well maintained and absolutely spotless, with a comfortable bed and all the facilities we needed.

We only had one full breakfast as we had to depart for an early flight on the second morning, but it was excellent, with more on offer had we wanted it. A cold breakfast was left in our fridge for the second morning, which was also great. It included a couple of slices of a large home-made muffin - make sure you try it, it was wonderful!

The b&b is located 5 or 10 minutes from Hilo, which is well worth visiting. Travel North for some beautiful waterfalls and rain forest and south to Volcano. The weather wasn't kind to us during our stay - a lot of rain - but that's common and is why the area is so green. We didn't let it stop us and we had an amazing day at Volcano. A tip - don't come back from Volcano too early. We went for a great Thai meal in Volcano village in the early evening and then returned to the volcano viewing area to see the volcano in all its glory at about 8pm - the glow from the crater just lit up the sky - it's a memory that will stay with us for years to come.

One more tip. Like many people, we stayed on the West coast first and then drove to Hilo for a couple of days. We drove across Saddle Road, which ends quite close to Island Goode's. It has a reputation from years gone by for being dangerous, but we found it absolutely fine - it's good quality highway for most of the route. It's a amazing drive and, if you have a 4x4, you can go right up to the top. We didn't and only went part of the way up, but even that was awesome.

We read comments about the noise of tree frogs at night. Yes, they were there, but it's quite a soothing sound and they really didn't bother us - they were probably less noisy than at some of the other locations that we visited in the Hawaii islands.

Island Goode's is a great base for a few nights stay. It's good value and we would definitely return. We recommend it 100%.

I can't say enought good things about Garvin and Laura's little slice of Paradise. It was a perfect base for exploring Mauna Kea and Volcanoes national park - and felt like we were driving back to a wonderful little fairyland at night when we would come in (complete with white twinkling lights after dark). It's a beautiful property with a sustainable farm, and the house is great - all the rooms are accessed separately from the outside lanai, so no need to disturb anyone else when you get back late. The rooms were spacious and well-furnished, and the grounds were gorgeous - we even had a little wedding there too. Just so pleasant - I really had to drag my husband away when it was time to leave (and he's a 'regular' hotel type of guy, late night room service, etc...). The breakfast was BEYOND as well - served every morning, with fresh fruit, awesome pancakes, eggs, etc...

I highly highly suggest staying there, we will be going back. Garvin and Laura mentioned they might be expanding into a second house on their spacious property, which would be great - even more choices! And did I mention there were hammocks in front of every room? It was just delightful!

Garvin and Laura were great - as helpful and/or as inconspicuous as you needed.

And there was a very nice hot tub, although we never got around to using it (had to get past the hammock outside the front door, and that usually caught us!).

I will definitely post some pics from this place it was great!

Room Tip: All of the rooms seemed great - I met people staying in different ones, coming and going out in the...

My family of 4 stayed in the Mauna Kea room with the extra bedroom attached for 3 nights. It was perfect. The kids each had their own bed and the main room was huge! It had a real feeling of remoteness even though town was only 5 minutes away. Surprisingly, for an island bed and breakfast it also had modern amenities such as a big screen tv (which we really didn't use!) and free wifi. The breakfasts were amazing. Laura made sure to check what the kids liked and was always willing to bring us more if we ran out - which was hard to do - I think our breakfasts could have easily served 6 people! She provided amazing fruit to try that she grew right on the property. Laura provided us with a pass into Volcano National Park when she found out we were heading there one day. It was a great place to "come home to" after exploring the island.

Room Tip: For families the Mauna Kea room with extra room attached is perfect!

I HIGHLY recommend Island Goodes B&B - you cannot go wrong staying here! We stayed here on our honeymoon and loved it! Laura and Garvin are wonderful people and made us feel right at home. Laura's breakfasts were delicious and quite filing, which was the perfect way to start out a day of exploring the island. We loved the location (10 minutes from Hilo) and our room overlooked Hilo Bay. The rooms were extremely clean and quite comfortable. When we come back to Hawaii with our whole family we will definitely stay here again. I recommend this B&B to couples and families.
