“Delicious breakfasts”
Reviewed May 22, 2011

We stayed with Laura and Garvin for 3 nights, the room was spotless and roomy, the bed large and very comfortable. Breakfast, served on our private terrace, was a wonderful surprise : freshly baked pastries (cinnamon rolls, banana muffin etc.), a great selection of tropical fruits from their farm (pineapple, rambutan, lychees, mangoes etc.). Laura was also a great source of advice and tips; we possibly would not have gone to Richardson's beach without her recommendation. People will surely mention the frogs as a plague of Hilo but Garvin and Laura have installed double-glazed windows (and very good ventilators so it is never stuffy) so you don't hear a thing. I slept like a baby every night.

We were referred to Island Goode"s B&B through another B&B because the Merrie Monarch Festival had everything tied up. We were indeed lucky to find this jewel of Papaikou (outside Hilo) which was perfect in location, service and friendliness.

Room Tip: The Mauna Kea rooms were a great deal.

We arrived (family of 4, kids 12 & 15) past 10PM and Garvin greated as as graciously as if we arrived at a more normal hour. The Mauna Kea Room (with an extra room) was very spacious, metculously clean and perfect for a family of four. The unit felt like we had our own home in their backyard. After a good night's sleep (great beds) we saw the property the next morning: stunningly beautiful! And the breakfasts were scrumptious: Laura's baked goods were fresh, wam and delicious, and the combination of tropical fruits were great. As an extra bonus we loved the tour of the grounds and farm that Laura gave us. Garvin and Laura both made as feel more like guests than like customers! On a final note, the location is great. Just a few miles from downtown Hilo, and less than a hour away from tons of great outdoor activities including Volcano National Park.

My wife and I traveled to Hilo before going on to O'ahu and Maui. We stayed for two nights and had a truly wonderful experience at this B&B. We highly recommend Island Goode's to anyone going to Hilo.

Just got back from Island Goodies and the hosts are great, anything you wanted they took care of it, even allowed me to park closer to our room, which meant parking on the grass. The only negative I can see, is the property does not have A/C and it is hard to enjoy the room during the day, but our hosts brought in a fan for us, which was nice. This place is very peaceful and isolated away from town. The breakfast was fantastic, got to try a few fruits I have never experienced, would go back again.

Five reasons why I would recommend this Bed and Breakfast, the home of Laura and Garvin, located on their eco-farm right outside of Hilo, Hawaii on the Big Island:
1. The property is beautiful and the rooms are well appointed. Each room is different, yet each has its own charm. The jacuzzi under the gazebo is a plus that you wouldn't expect in a Bed and Breakfast
2. It is so comfortable! Each room has a separate entrance so it is like being in someone's home with a bit of your own privacy to boot. The 'sleep number' beds allow you to program the mattress to just how you like it, no matter how hard or soft. Plus, you can program one side to one number, the other side to different number for those couples who like different levels of firmness in their mattress.
3. It is clean - the room as well as the grounds around the room
4. You go to a B&B because you are looking for a more intimate experience than a regular hotel. The owners, Laura and Garvin, along with eco-farmer volunteer Jimmy, make for a good feeling of friendship. I stayed for three weeks and I am going to be difficult to leave...
5. The location is super. Six miles outside of Hilo, you are a short jaunt away from town, right near the Botanical Gardens, a great surf beach, a scenic overlook, a scenic drive and, even though you are right off the highway, you feel like you are immersed in Hawaii's nature.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - it was so quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed listening to the music of the frogs at night - we really did! The breakfasts were fantastic with all the local fruit, but the smoothies were the best! We especially enjoyed learning about the Goode's unique farm operations. We will highly recommend your B&B as an ideal place to stay.
