“Do not miss the Tropical Botanical Gardens”

Another must-do on the Hilo side. I felt like I was in Jurassic Park! The tropical forest/garden was beautiful! I could have spent hours admiring all the different species of fauna and the view of the ocean itself! Give yourself at least 1 - 2 hours to enjoy this place.

“Worth every penny and breathtaking!!”
Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

Plan a little over an hour to take in this spectacular garden. The flora and fauna are amazing, lush and colorful. The views of the ocean are excellent with crashing waves. It is very well maintained. A bit of hiking, hot and humid but highly rewarding!

“One of the biggest surprises of our trip”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

This garden is the Smithsonian of botanical gardens. Immaculate detail throughout -- you will want 90 minutes minimum here. It is a "wow" experience even if you are not a botanical garden person and is rated as a "not to miss" in Big Island Revealed (which I absolutely agree with).

The garden in addition to its immaculate detail, has a gorgeous waterfall and part of the walk is along the ocean coast.

I am really surprised anyone rates this anything but the top ranking - seriously, this has got to be one of the top 5 botanical gardens in the world. A great way to enjoy this is to see Akaka Falls first (and Umama, but note that it has high entrance fee), have lunch at What's Shakin' and then drive the scenic route a couple miles to the Garden. Makes for a memorable day that you won't forget.

“Gorgeous”
Reviewed July 9, 2014 via mobile

Nicely laid out self-guided walking tour. Long climb up fairly steep boardwalk on your way out but definitely worth it. Beautiful views and vistas of waterfalls, streams, crashing waves along the coast, and of course lots and lots of blooms, tropical plants and giant ferns and trees. Not too long of a stop and full gardens can be seen relatively quickly, depending on how fast or slow you want to go.

“Great gardens; well worth the drive”
Reviewed July 9, 2014

Headed over to the Hilo side to see the Volcano National Park and stopped to visit these gardens in route based on trip advisor rating.........and the rating is deserved. This is the best tropical garden I've seen on any of the islands. Lush and interesting species of plants and the setting was marvelous. Make sure you say 'hi' or 'bye' to the macaws............at least one of them will talk back to you. My fourteen year old son had a great time and I wasn't expecting that at all. Just a great place.
