“Wonderful night time serenade”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2012

Nice facilities in a tropical garden setting. The tree frogs provide a beautiful serenade after dark.
Petra is a wonderful hostess. She shows an interest in the guests' plans and makes valuable suggestions. We enjoyed two great dinners based upon Petra's recommendations. We used Hale Makamae as a base for visiting the Tropical Botanical Gardens and Volcanoes National Park.

The studio was fine for two. There are a lot of outdoor lights that made sleeping a little difficult as the curtains were thin. The banana pancakes were good. John and Petra are very hospitable and leant us a great map to use. The shower curtain is a little dirty on the bottom, otherwise the place was clean.

Quiet and relaxing grounds. perfect spot from which to explore the Puna district on the Big Island.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden suite, very roomy for a couple with a nice mini kitchen.

Nice facilities, wonderful gardens. John and Petra great hosts. Breakfast was delicious, and full of variety. Excellent guidance with sightseeing, especially because they lent us key maps of the area for the duration of our stay. Petra's recommendation of Paolo's Italian restaurant was on the money. One cautionary note: Endless "singing" of the coqui frogs at night might bother some, but we were ok with it. If you prefer a resort, this is not for you, but if you want a relaxing place in the woods, this is it.

We loved our time at Hale Makamae. We stayed April 27&28th,2012. The gardens are beautiful and since I love flowers, I took a lot of pictures. My husband was stationed in Germany so he really enjoyed visiting with John and Petra about that area.We appreciated all the info and directions they gave us about the area and attractions. The breakfasts were great. I probably gained a couple pounds back of the eight I lost before we arrived in Hawaii. We definitely would stay again and will reccomend to friends. Also enjoyed meeting their lovely children. We had friends traveling with us who did not call in time to get a room at Hale Makamae but Petra made sure they found another b&b close by. Aloha

my wife and i stayed at hale makamae b&b may 14-17 for the second half of our honeymoon after flying over from oahu. their property is gorgeous and they couldn't be more kind. petra makes a nice breakfast every morning, but sadly we had so much we wanted to do everyday we were only there for one of them. the local area is beautiful and unique. just minutes from a lava viewing area and even closer to quiet beaches. the town just down the road has several good restaurants (with 10% off via displaying your b&b card) and some fast food. i would happily stay with them again.

Room Tip: lanai sweet is the top floor and largest. worth the extra money.

We loved this B&B. It felt like home and the breakfast was delicious. John and Petra are so nice. We loved the personalized map and guide instructions from John. We did every activity he recommended and felt much better with his specific details at hand. Thanks for a great stay!
