We came to check it out, we left quickly. The surf was so rough, too dangerous to even put your feet in. Up the road there is another black sand beach, clothing optional, a bit less rough.

What visit to the Big Island would not include the newest black sand beach?

We took a drive here while staying in a tiny home in Kalapana for the night. Beautiful drive. Many spots to stop and view the ocean, cliffs and sunshine.

The black sand beach is wild and beautiful. The boat ramp is gone. Replaced with broken down lava and olivine. It is certainly a black "sand" beach. As with most black sand beaches I have seen over the years it is not really sand but lava rock that has been broken down due to hot lava entering the cool ocean and being bashed by waves.

The views are beautiful and the sounds of the crashing waves was perfect. But it is not possible to swim here. The surf is very rough. You can here the lava rocks rolling in the waves-sound like far off thunder. It is apparent Pele wanted this for herself and is doing what she can to keep it that way.

We did see one of the lifeguards swimming out here and could only think to ourselves that he was crazy.

Drive over, take a look, walk around, listen and watch. It is a sight to behold how Pele and Mother Nature can work their magic on something like this.

I have been around a little, but this is one of the most wonderful places I have seen in my life!

To get to this beach, very black beach, you have to actually cross some of the lava that covered the area a couple of years ago (road is very good, no risk for the car) and to walk on that black beach (and also having a small swim, but only if you are a VERY good swimmer!) is an incredible experience!

Isolated black sand beach accessed by walking or hiking down a cliff path. Medium to strong surf, clothing optional experience. If you want pure black sand then this place is for you.

It’s one of the most beautiful scenic drive along the coast of 137. It is located at the intersection of the narrow Pohoiki road and the Kapoho-Kalapana road.

Lava flows from the 2018 lower Puna eruption covered some of the Park. When you drive along 137, some parts Of the road you can see the new Lava formation from 2018. You will also going thru few beautiful tree tunnels. Once you get into the park, you will see the Fresh Black sand beach and they are so soft. Not easy to swim or snorkel there. The current is very strong. Absolutely beautiful. Worth to take a road trip there.
