We do a mother - daugther trip to Hawaii every year. Usually we stay in nice hotels right on the beach. This time we decided to do something different. We booked the Tropical Round House because it is away from the grid - and loved it. Coming from California I smiled when waking up to the sound of rain. The house is on the rainy side of the Island but most days it clears up or you just drive to a different location. This is Hawaii you always need to expect a little rain.
The house is thoughtfully furnished, there is TV and internet, but for the most part you will immediately unplug when you get there. The kitchen is A+ equipped with any tool a chef can ask for. You will need the kitchen because the local restaurants while OK didn't knock me off my feet and I like cooking. There is a great grocery store in town, the health food store we found a little dated and smelly.
The location of the house is hidden away and you will truly be in nature. There is a lot to do in the immediate neighborhood and we found ourselves on many excursions in the lesser known parts of the Big Island.
We will be back, this was more relaxing than most of my other trips. Definitely recommend it.

Here are a few things you should know:
It is a location away from the grid. There is a town, but it is small and not a tourist attraction.
There are a number of hippies and free spirited people/families that live on that side of the island. You do stand out as a tourist.
Bring water shoes and shoes with good soles to walk because a lot of the excursions go over lava rock.
The next grocery store is a 4 mile drive so stock up when you get there (which is what the guide says)
No need to bring books, or Hawaii guides, there are plenty in the house.

These owners have built a beautiful home actually in the "rain forest".All the comforts of home-clean, washer dryer, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, barbeque, tv-- all beautiful. The grounds are amazing! True Hawaii. It is in the slower area of the island (which is exactly what we wanted).
We swam with sea turtles everyday at beaches in Hilo. The Saddleroad is now an excellent road to travel to Kona. The owners take care of everything for you and are very attentive to emails and questions. If you don't like nature, (you can hear birds tweeting in the bushes and frogs croaking and other nature sounds all the time)this is not the place for you. If you love nature-it's magical perfection!!! Much Aloha

We have just returned to the UK from a fabulous 2 week stay at this superb property. It really is as beautiful as it looks in the photographs - and perfectly tucked away and secluded, yet close enough to the small town of Pahoa to enable easy access for shopping and restaurants, fuel etc.
This property is located on the eastern side of Big Island - which is less touristy and much more picturesque (in our opinion). There are plenty of things to see and do within a 30 minute drive of the property - but we also travelled all across the Island with ease.
Sharon and Loly are fantastic hosts - and provide plenty of support and information via email prior to your stay in their property.
Our highlights included Humpback Whale Watching, Boat trips out to see lava flowing into the sea (amazing), snorkelling with turtles and lazing around in the thermal pools.
We chose this property from the information and comments posted on Trip Advisor - and it was exactly what we were looking for!
Just a point to note about car hire - concern is sometimes raised about the Saddle Road, we hired an SUV via Avis, and had no restrictions or concerns.
