What a terrible experience is this tour!

It costs $ 200,- and for that they promise you a 2 hour boat tour. Instead, in 1 hour and 20 minutes we were back.... I said something about that and inmediately the captain was rude to me. Later, on the phone, he was extremely rude!!! Also I paid for a sunset tour (so I can see the lava in the light as well as in dark and it cost extra) but the sunset started when we were back on shore! You only get 10 minutes lava time and you can only see half of the time because you are on one side of the boat. In the back you can't understand anything of the things they tell about the lava as well...

Loved the lava for the 5 minutes I had, but this tour is the biggest rip-off I ever had. And the captain is just rude and inconsederate!

Yes the ride is bumpy and you will get wet ! But what an experience ! Seeing lava fall into the ocean so close ! If you are interested in volcanos, geology or simply curious, this is your ride ! You get to see how an island gets created ! Live ! By the way, the captain and crew are real pros and you never feel unsafe. We took the 330 pm tour and were absolutely not disappointed, saw plenty of red lava fall into the ocean. A great experience I will never forget !

5 stars in every category. To sum it up you have two other options to see lava; an expensive helicopter tour from hundreds of feet away for a quarter of the time or a multi hour hike where you can barely see the flow from the cliff(we laughed at the hikers). Go with the boat ride.

The crew was very professional, experienced and knew a bit of geology to go with.

We booked the 430am ride, and it was a ride. Its half an hour to the flows and another half back of thrills on the water. My wife and I love rollercoasters and thats what you get when you sit near the front, your butt will fly for a few split seconds. Their boat was about 45ft long and sturdy enough to withstand quite a bit of thrashing. There were plenty of seats in the back for those not wanting to be jostled in transit. We got showered a bit from crashing through the waves so i suggest bringing a water resistant top for the colder tours.

We trolled around the lava flows for about an hour taking pictures and discussing the geology. The boat normally stayed 10 feet from where the flows hit the water and at our closest the boat was about 4 feet away. You can feel the lavas heat from about 12 feet away. Everyone got plenty of pics from all angles.

I recommend this company to all able bodied (no big prior back neck or hip injuries) people. We will certainly do it again in a few years.

Also the boat is coast guard certified and has a clean safety record. Have fun.

We were extremely pleased with our trip. A once in a lifetime opportunity. The pictures and memories will last a lifetime. The guides were amazing, getting us close enough to feel the heat from the flowing lava!! Just absolutely amazing, don't miss out on this amazing site.

We got to see something that most people will never see in person (earth being formed). The captain gets you up close to the lava flowing into the ocean and we had plenty of time to take photographs and video. You can feel the heat from the lava and see the vapors rising into the sky. The lava is orange in color and spectacular. It is a bit of a drive from the west end of the Island where we stayed. However, the drive and ride were worth it. We were told to bring raincoats but did not. But, other than getting our faces wet, it was not that bad. The boat ride to and from the lava flow was great with the boat going up and down constantly. It was like we got two rides for the price of one. The crew warns you to stay seated because of the bouncing and danger you will bang your face on the seat in front of you. We sat in the middle which was still bouncy and the crew said the rear is smoother. The boat operates all day long with a dawn tour to start. I recommend the evening tour before the sun goes down and especially if you do not like to get up early. The light was perfect for taking photographs and video. A couple of caveats: they tow the boat into the parking lot and you climb a ladder to get into the boat. It is the same way when you come back. Also, if you take the evening tour, your dining options are limited in Hilo other than fastfood. Take the tour. You won't regret it.
