We had a great time. The lava fields were awesome. We found a hot spot where lava was flowing under our feet that produced enough heat to catch a small branch on fire.

Myself and my daughter took one of these tours last summer at the start of July. I had a bad feeling when the owner booked our "Best of the Big Island" tour, via cellphone in what sounded like rush hour traffic. Still, we arrived in Hilo for what was suppose to be a tour that would take us on a hike thru the jungle to see some spectacular waterfalls. Followed by an afternoon hike for 45 min. out across the lava to the Pu'u O'o vent, and then some touring in and around Kiluea Crater. We were told to book our return flight for some time after at least 4:30.We were picked up by private car and driven to the Kiluea area where we did, in fact ,do some hiking around on the Park trails through the forest. I also got a quick photo of the vent from about 6 miles away. Apparently it was too far to drive to get to the actively flowing lava, if we wanted to hike to the falls. So we opted to go to the falls instead. But halfway there,we were told there was a drought, so there was no water, therefore there was no point going to see the waterfalls. We were dumped at the airport with enough time to wander around for awhile, exchange our tickets, and catch the 3:50 flight back to Oahu. We did not get to see any waterfalls, though I did note that every stream we passed enroute was full of rushing water. Our closest approach to a hike across the lava was some pictures taken by the side of the road, I had to crop them to get rid of the car's rearview mirror. I did get a photo of the Pu'u O'o vent from a point I was later told ( by the owner) was actually about 6 miles away from where we should have started our hike out across the lava. It looks like a cloud of steam far off in the distance. When I called the owner to complain, I was told it was all a terrible mistake...inexperianced guide, didn't follow his directions, etc. But no mention of any compensation. Then to add insult to injury he didn't pay the guide but instead gave her my e-mail address, so she could harrass me for payment. He pocketed the full payment for himself. I eventually had to go through Visa to get a partial refund.
If I had it to do over again. Rent a car. The park has lots of maps showing where the sights are. Park staff can tell you where to park and what to do OR what NOT to do.There were lots of groups of people hiking around the area, simply follow another group of people or even better, get yourself in between two groups, one ahead, one behind for safety. The main trails are well marked, follow the park safety rules, don't wander ANYWHERE off the main trails. Enjoy yourself and blow the tour money on food and keepsakes at the park store.
