If you are staying in the Kailua-Kona area it will take about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to make it down to this lightly traveled gem. If you are making the Black Sand Beach and Volcano National Park (VNP) run for the day it makes for a great diversion along the way. The private owners of this lava tube have diligently shown care of for it; making it enjoyable for you. We took the lighted trail tour which people of a wide range of ages can easily do in your shorts and tennis shoes. If you are paying attention while walking you could even do this particular tour in your open toed shoes. If doing the other more adventurous tours you will need to follow their clothing guidelines..
Now you are probably thinking "I read on the VNP web site that their is a lava tube (Thurston) there that is included in my park admission and I will go to it and save some money." While the Thurston tube is in a beautiful tropical setting you will come away leaning very little of what you are looking at. Kula Kai caverns will fill the void.
As mentioned in the other post you must call in advance for a reservation as this is in a private gated subdvision. Get details at their website http://www.kulakaicaverns.com
