We bought 3 different malasadas, taro, passion fruit, and original. They were no different except the color and not that good to begin with. Maybe they would be better warm but we arrived within 30 minutes of them opening and they were already cold in the case.

We stopped here on route to Volcano National Park from Kona after reading about the bakery in a Lonely Planet travel book. Admittedly, one of the main reasons we stopped was because I'd read they served excellent malasadas. I'd never even heard about malasadas until I read about the ones served at Tex Drive-In in Honoka'a on the Hamakua coast where we'd stopped the day before to try one of these tasty treats that are a cross between a sweet bread and holeless donut. Hooked from the minute I tried one at Tex, I just had to stop at Punaluu Bake Shop and try their version of this melt in your mouth deliciousness!

The other reason I was curious to stop was because the bakery is described as being the southern-most bakery in the US. The bakery was much larger than I anticipated with a nice gift shop, outdoor seating areas and a lovely interpretive garden out back to sit and relax while finishing off that malasada and a coffee!

The bakery does serve much more than just malasadas and their famous sweet bread which you can find in stores around the island. It makes for a nice rest stop for a snack and a washroom break.

YES, this is a world famous bakery for sweetbreads of all imaginable varieties: guava and even taro flavors included, and malasadas (Hawaiian donuts) to "break da mou',", BUT! this wonderful place really offers quite a varied daily menu including seafood salads, chef and cobb salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, ice creams, local Ka'u coffee varieties and soft drinks, and a special of the day which, recently, featured lasagna with tossed salad! All can be wrapped up to go! OR, to enjoy outside in one of the beautiful gazebos sprinkled around beautiful tropical gardens buzzing with wonderful tropical birds. There is also a large gift shop right on the premises featuring local arts, jewelry, music, books, perfumes, oils and lotions, you name it!

This is a cool bakery with great food, over priced souvenirs, clean and pretty garden rest/eating area.
Service is sometimes questionable but everything else makes up for it. Been there three times with three different (children) families and would always go back again.

Food wasn't super great and we felt like we were an inconvenience for the staff to have to ring up our purchases.
