Ka Lae Coffee Lovers!
After we wandered the wind-blown landscape at South Point, we headed north down the narrow road to get back to Hwy 11. There was a small sign for Ka Lae on the shoulder of the road pointing to a right turn that looked as if it was a driveway. Feeling adventurous and both of us craving a cup of good coffee, we said "Why not?".
So we make the turn and it sure does seem like a driveway--there is the house---"What's going on?"--"I don't know!"--"Look for a place to turn around!"-------"OH, THERE it is (behind the house)"--"Welcome sign is out...and I REALLY would love a cup of coffee!"---"OK, let's check it out."
THAT was one of the best decisions we made on this vacation! The owner, Kate, greeted us with a big welcoming smile that instantly melted any of our previous concerns. The smell of the just coming out of the oven fresh baked cookies melted any desire to watch calories!
As the coffee was being prepared, I'd wandered around a bit and noticed a doorway that led into a greenhouse. Kate noticed my interest and said go ahead, check it out if you'd like. I LIKED! We spent at least an hour sipping coffee and taking photos of the magnificent orchids growing in there.
I highly recommend this place for anyone heading back to the highway after a trip to the South Point/Green Sand Beach area. They are open from 7-4 daily....just park behind the house and make yourself at home. Tell Kate "Hi" for us!
