“Jeep heaven and green sands”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2014 via mobile

After a little walking of the early part of the trail to check the route we had a ball driving over the rocks and impacted sand to get to the green sand beach. When in doubt we took the route with no grass on it as more vehicles had obviously gone that way than the 2 or 3 alternatives. No route way markers presumably so that the locals charging for driving visitors don't give secrets away.
Fabulous colour and feel of the green sand but sea a little boisterous the day we were there ( swam anyway).

Great day trip! Rented a jeep so just followed other 4 wheels in! Wish I would've brought a cooler. Beach and water are beautiful!

“Best Beach Day Ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

We headed down to Green Sand on a clear warm day, we stopped at the cliff jumping area at South Point Cliffs which down on a side road. The cliffs are about 15-20 minutes out of the way but totally worth it to go and see it. There were people jumping and fishermen. If you plan on jumping only go on a nice, calm day. The waves could be treacherous if not. When we got to GSB there are locals that offer to take you down to the beach for about $3-5 per person. Don't pay more than $10, barter with them. IT'S WORTH THE MONEY. It's a far far walk to the beach (probably 45-60 minutes). Make sure you strap in because it's a bumpy, fun ride there!! When we arrived it was lightly misting but very warm. I think that made for the best beach day ever. The water was very warm and the way the beach is set up, it's surrounded by a cove so its protected. One of the best days of my trip. The beach is relatively small however. The beach is all sand so no water shoes are needed. There's no food places around even driving there, so make sure you pack a food.

“Once in a lifetime: Don't miss the green sand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014 via mobile

If you are going to the Big Island, don't miss the Green Sand Beach! It is one of only 4 in the world. (Others are in Guam, Galápagos Islands, & Norway, so for most of us, Hawaii is our best best to see this natural wonder.) On the advice of our car rental company, we rented a Jeep Liberty and tried to drive there. Let me say this: unless you are an expert on driving extremely rough terrain, don't do this. Just get a regular vehicle & park in the parking lot. We got 100 yards down the road and saw that there was no way that 2 Midwesterners were going to be able to drive the rough terrain. We could have paid locals $20 each to give us a ride, but we figured there is no fun or story to tell in that. So we walked. It is a long, hot, dry walk, and there are no facilities. But it also is a beautiful walk. Take plenty of water and sunscreen. It took us about and hour and a half there and back. The Green Sand Beach is gorgeous and worth every step! It is certainly is beautiful and something different to see.

Ka Lae is not as spectacular, but you should see it while you're there. It has a nice view of the ocean, and it's not every day that you can say you were on the southernmost point of the United States. When we were there, locals also had some nice handmade jewelry for sale in the back of their pickups for reasonable prices.

“This place is one of the most beautiful places”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2014 via mobile

My wife and I are here on a vacation just the two of us and this place was amazing.

Things to note:
It is a 2-3 mile hike in and the same on the way out. There are some locals that will transport you for a fee. If your bringing a lot of stuff just be prepared it is a log hike.

The beach is somewhat small if there are a lot of people there you may have trouble finding a place to put your belongings and the climb down the beach is very steep but mostly sand so if you slip you be ok.
This was one of the most unbelievable experiences at this beach. I would absolutely recommend the Trek. I would not bring small children as the walk again is long and I am sure having to possibly carry your children would be the worst .

The other thug is this is close to the south most point in the us "south point" there is cliff jumping into the Ocean which was incredible. My wife bucked up and took the 50 - 60 jump and her words were it was exhilarating.

Hope this helps and enjoy Hawaii!
