“Green sand beach is not easy to get to but worth it!”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

The green sand beach is a must see if you are visiting the Big Island....one of only two in the world...you gotta see it! But it's an adventure to get there. We took our rental car as far as we could, which was a parking lot where some locals were offering $15/person to take us on a VERY bad 4x4 only road. (Pay for the taxi, it's worth it. The hike is long, hot and dusty.)
We rode in the back of a truck, held on for our lives, and were completely covered in dust by the time we reached the green sand beach. The view on the ride there was nice...what we could see through the dust, that is.
Once we reached the beach, we forgot any difficulty we had endured getting there. In a word, it is amazing! Green sand with flecks of gold that sparkle in the sun. We played in the water for approx an hour while the driver waited for us. Awesome!

“Beautiful scenery”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Took a couple of hours to drive from Hilo to South Point but it was well worth it. Lots of great scenery on the way (the house painted in Laker colors complete with logo, giant parabolic antennae, remote home sites that look like dumps, wind swept trees, wind turbines). Once there the views are spectacular. There are parts of abandoned houses that used to belong to a temporary Army airfield set up during WWII on the way from South Point to Green Sand Beach. Pay the money to have a local driver take you out to Green Sand Beach. The drive itself was an adventure and our driver stopped at a really small green sand beach where the sand was even greener than the bigger beach.

“Don't know why they say no rental cars but (ignore it)”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

Get on down there and watch the locals jump from the cliffs and see the odd way they fish down here. It is the end of the earth. but I loved every minute of being here. It is almost magical. DO Not attempt to drive your car to Green sand beach!! Bad Idea.
I did not make it to Green sand it was to hot to walk the two plus miles. I have heard you can hire some of the locals to give you a ride for 10-20 bucks but I found this out later. South point is about a 30 mile round trip and one of my favorite drives. Also watched kids jumping in the blow hole and then swimming through the cave opening out the cliffs. I hope you take time to enjoy this place.

“South Point and the Green Sand beach”
Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

South Point and the Green Sand beach on Hawaii Big island are beautiful places to visit. Unless you have four wheel drive or proper attire for a two plus mile hike in the wind and sand storm be prepared to pay the locals (ask for David - great local fisherman) around 10-15 per person for a ride to the green sand. We had great surf for body surfing. Stay close to shore.

“Pay the 10$ per person”
Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

Although you will be sitting in the back of a beat up pick up truck, it is well worth the time and energy you would have spent otherwise trying to negociate the ridiculously rough trails to the risk of seriously damaging your 4 wheeler or even worse wasting 90 minutes just to get there walking. If you are Lucky, your driver will be someone that will take the time to speak to you about the surroundings and wont mind waiting for you until you have gotten your full of the majestic scenery of green sand beach. As for south point,go crazy and jump off or just enjoy the fact you are as far south as can be and let the ocean colors work their magic into your memory chest.
