We arrived at the parking lot at 8am and we were the only ones there. We knew our Ford Focus would not make the trek to the beach so we were relieved to see a truck. He wanted $15/person but we bargained for $10. It was a rough 20 minute ride to the beach but we had a blast! The beach was beautiful and I was so glad we decided to make a stop before heading the the volcano! Get there early and be the only ones on the beach!

HONESTLY, this is as far SOUTH as you can go in the USA. The Ka Lae (Hawaiian: the point) area is registered as a National Historic Landmark District under the name South Point Complex. The area is also known for its strong ocean currents and winds and is home to a wind farm. Green Sands Beach, which is composed of glistening green olivine crystals is accessible by 4/w drive or about a 2 mile hike in. An unforgettable memory to say you've stood on the southernmost piece of land in the USA.

Well worth the extra dive to go see the cliffs at South Point. Look for divers off the cliff and also into a cave opening. It really startled us when a young man plunged into that cave hole. It opens to the sea and is filled with water. We were also fortunate enough with a local's truck to drive to the green sand beach. A very special place. You cannot drive a rental car over the rough terrain and the walk is doable. Allow enough time to walk there, enjoy the beach for awhile and be back to your rental car before dark.

Desolate territory, windswept and beautiful. People were jumping off the cliffs 40 ft into the ocean... my wife and I decided to skip this part, and just observe!
Even the drive down here from Kona is nice, Hawaii without the resorts.

We enjoyed the view at the southern point and after much thought decided to brave the drive to green sand beach in our rental jeep. It was quite the ride and thankfully my husband had experince off roading otherwise I don't know if we would have made it. At some points the road was quite steep with high clearance if we weren't in a wrangler I don't think we could have made it either. Although the drive was a few miles at some points I felt lost and not sure we were still headed the right way luckily one of the locals shuttling people out there pointed us in the right direction. Once there it was beautiful, not as green as I had pictured it but nonetheless a unique view.
