“Green tea with maggots!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2013

Food seemed good at first but after I pulled off the lid off the tea kettle, I was shocked. I was drinking green tea with dead maggots. Sinds I am a tourist, I was unsure what tot do. In my naiefness I thought it was normal. But after looking on google I know its not. After this new knowledge I cannot help but tot doubt the quality of the food overall.
I advice everybody to at least check the tea kettle and pull off the sieve.

“One of our favorite restaurants in the world!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

This isn't fancy, this place isn't swanky--it's old and historic and bare bones but the traditional Japanese lunch and dinner are so worth the drive from Kohala resorts. It has been here since 1929--we always come many times during our visit to the Big Island--it is a family run establishment--for a decent price you get a lunch tray of miso soup, fresh sashimi, fried ahi--sukiyaki, fabulous green tea and perfect rice. There is great tempura, teriyaki beef and chicken, udon soups, saimin, etc. When we come here we really feel like it is home--old time locals, tourists, and the family that runs it is very sweet. We have been going here for fifteen years! Grandma is going to be 106 and though she doesn't work at the restaurant anymore we remember her well through the years. What a lovely and historic restaurant to visit and what nourishing and fresh food they serve! Can't ask for more in a restaurant. We can't wait to go back!

“Old Hawaii Style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

We ate here with family and found lots of fresh choices. The place is plain, but super clean, and all the workers are pros. We ordered six different entrees, each one of which was hot, delicious, and in large portions. On Saturday night, the line was out the door! Also went there for a superb breakfast. Try the Portuguese sausage!

“Simple menu - No frills”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

Just off the highway headed South we stopped at this Japanese restaurant for some saimin. An older restaurant with original décor, family run with lots of community history to share. Inexpensive prices but bring cash - no credit cards accepted.
