Visited the farm yesterday. When we arrived, the staff rushed up to ask we would like a tour which we declined politely as we have been there before. We were there to buy coffee and to look at the chamelons. Staff treated us with 'politically correct' attitude but lack the warmth which very much would have influenced my next visit...yup, I would definitely give it a miss the next time....a smile and warmth was definitely lacking as we were the only visitors at one point.

This is a nice little tour of a coffee farm that has a long history in Hawaii. Our guide was full of interesting facts and quite entertaining during the entire tour. It was raining a bit but the farm staff supplied umbrellas if we needed them. It was fun sampling the various coffees afterwards and we did purchase beans for ourselves. If any oranges or avocados had fallen off the trees onto the ground, we were quite welcome to have them. We returned to the farm later in our visit to purchase more beans as gifts for friends, and one of the staff even remembered us from our earlier visit. Overall, a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

This was a wonderful little tour. We got to see where the coffee is grown and how it is processed. Our tour guide even climbed a tangerine tree to retrieve some fruit for us. Lots of fun and a must do on the big island.

I'll say that this was worth a stop in that we went on Thursday and did the bread baking with Kona Historical Society.

Greenwell didn't have much to show when we went on the tour. The coffee samples were so-so. Most of the coffees you'll see there are actually blended from many different Kona coffee farmers selling their coffee cherry to Greenwell to be processed. Thus it's harder for them to maintain any degree of quality control until that stage. But even their "private estate" coffee, grown in-house, wasn't that spectacular.

The lady who gave us the tour grew up on the farm and knew the facility, but didn't have much to say or present about roasting. The roasting room is apparently too small to accomodate tours while in operation.

So go ahead and take the coffee tour while you're waiting for your bread to bake next door. Outside of that, skip Greenwell and go to Hula Daddy instead.

Greenwell Farms has a long history and a small farm and processing facility so you can see how the cherry gets turned into a a perfect roasted bean. The staff were very friendly and explained the details. At the end, samples are free and bags are ready for purchase. I would recommend going a day other than Sunday so you can tour the historical society and other shops in the area.
