I did not like this hostel at all. Now granted, I am not a hostel person and only took this place out of neccessity. The dorm room we stayed in was fairly clean and so were the bathrooms, but the bunk beds were high and there was no ladder to get onto the top. Also, the showers close at 10 pm and reopen at 6:30 am. As we were on the road until after 10 at night and back on the road before 6 in the morning we had to resort to showers at the beach parks. The owner Annie is very hard to deal with - there were some misunderstandings because English is her 2nd language. That is ok, but she was very rude when I tried to explain the problem to her and refused to accept any responsibility. She was also very unfriendly, short tempered and rude to other people I was travelling with. The location is not great, it is near nice places to visit but is right beside the road and not within walking distance of restaurants or attractions. And avoid the private rooms! They are expensive and not worth it. You can get similar priced rooms at a real hotel in Kona. So, not a bad place all in all if you have no other choice, and the staff was very nice and quite helpful... but do your best to avoid the owner and make sure you clarify EVERYTHING with her first as her English is quite low.

The is the most horrible hostel I have ever seen. The room stinks. We even saw a big rat in the kitchen. People stay there call it " our roommate". It is so disgusting. I will never stay there ever again even it is free. It almost ruined our vacation!
Koa wool halle is cheaper and a lot nicer!

It's a very nice Hostel near to the airport and many attractions. It work's together with the Hilo Airport Hostel, so we could stay at both of it and could visit the whole island really comfortable. The staff in both Hostels were really friendly and helpfull!

This hostel is brilliant. It is a small hostel with a family feel. Rooms and facilities were clean and tidy, everything you would want. Free wifi was fast and reliable. Rooms were quiet and comfortable, not too hot. Our private room was furnished to a high standard. No air conditioning but extra fans were made available.

The location is okay, it is a good base to see the island from. It is 15 mins from downtown Kona. Not a problem at all if you have your own transport. However there is a free bus service that circumnavigates the entire island. Goes to Kona and Hilo that stops right outside the hostel. There is also a convenience store and payphone directly opposite the hostel which is very useful.

The hostel is very close to Captain cook where the Snorkling is world class! If you stay here you must go Snorkling there!!!! Hostel offers Snorkling gear and kayak hire at reasonable prices. The hike down the old Lava flows to the coast is an experience I will never forget. The walk back up wasn't as fun but is totally worth it. You could also kayak across the bay from Captain cook if you didn't fancy the hike!

The owner Annie really made our stay, she was kind, helpful and a great hostess. Bare in mind all of this is from a hostel, not a hotel. All of this service was a pleasant surprise and you would not expect it in any hostel. Annie really went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed our stay.

Several things she did of note:

She picked us up and dropped us off at the airport.
She bought us a whole roast chicken to eat the night we arrived as she thought we may have been hungry, we were upgraded for free from a dorm to a private room.
She offered us a room in her sister hostel in Hilo which we also stayed in... again a private room at dorm prices.

From my impression any negative comments on here about the hostel/owner stem from unrealistic expectations. This is a small, friendly hostel that gives you a taster the island experience. It is reasonably priced and certainly exceeded our expectations in our stay.

Highly recommended.

Generally on the big island I would recommend hiring a car and driving round the whole island (stay in this hostel to see the West side) then move to the sister hostel in Hilo and drive up Mauna kea and round the volcanic national parks.

I just finished a 2 week stay and the KONA - Pineapple Park and had a wonderful time! Annie, Mike and Mark were all very helpful to me when ever I needed directions or info for things to do. She runs a tight ship. She makes sure everyone is comfortable and has everything you need in the kitchen, there's lots of hot water and it is very clean! Felt very safe as a single female traveler and plan on staying again. I got to know Annie, her little watch dog Lilli--so cute!--and other guests staying there. Everyone was respectful of quite times, etc. I would DEFINATELY recommend that you rent a car. The hostel is about 1/2 hr outside of Kona town, but close to the best snorkeling and sights. I will be on the Big Island for 4 more weeks and plan on going back. (If this review looks familiar - I wrote a review for their HILO hostel by mistake! Meant to write for the KONA side!)

Room Tip: I stayed in the front room by the office and felt very safe and comfy.

The woman that runs this hostel is rude and does not make you feel welcome or reflect the aloha spirit you expect when you come to " the big island".

I left after one night the last time as money is the only thing the woman cares about. She takes your money and then makes you feel uncomfortable.

The rooms are hot and uncomfortable and the hostel owner barges in when she wants making strange accusations about her "rules". Maybe this is ok for teenagers who need a mother to look after them but not a paying guest who gave you money for a place to stay with the assumption I would be free from harassment by management.

You will be left wishing someone had taken the time to warn you.

This is that warning!

You are better off getting a tent and camping than putting up with this woman and her horrible idea of customer service.

Perfectly adequate hostel, clean with nice outdoor area (though no views) and also decent kitchen showers etc. My room was a little noisy as close to the road but this is after being totally out in the jungle previously so maybe I was sensitive to urban noises. The great thing was Mike at the hire desk, he gave me great honest advice about where to snorkel and what to do and he was a gentleman as I dithered about whether or not to hire a canoe etc. Good people who take time to help make all the difference.

Negative point...charging one dollar for postcards that are 5 for a dollar elsewhere is not on. Especially when the rooms are reasonably priced
