“Great place to stay!”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

We have stayed at the Ala Kai twice, in 2010 and November 2012. Both times, the Ala Kai was a very pleasant place to stay. The pool there is great. Every morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast on the lanai overlooking the ocean. Rooms are clean, stocked with everything one would need, and the hosts are friendly and helpful. There is a BBQ available as well as a picnic basket with utensils to enjoy dinner or lunch in. It is close to volcanoes, snorkeling, lava pools and other must-sees in Hawaii. When we return, we will stay here again!

Room Tip: The Bamboo suite is great

My wife and I visited the Big Island in July this year and stayed at the Ala Kai. What a magnificent experience it was! Pat and Mary were the most gracious hosts.....supplying us everyday with a delicious breakfast, travel ideas, snorkeling equipment, ice chests, etc. We have stayed at more than a few B&B's and the Ala Kai provided the best environment along with the best hospitality we've experienced. The place sits close to the ocean in a secluded area south of Hilo.....very quiet, peaceful, and oh so relaxing. We were close to Volcano National Park, numerous waterfalls, the End of the Road lava flows, Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui natural hot tub, and some gorgeous coastal roads. While we seemed to be on the go quite a bit trying to see all the sights of the Big Island, we also truly enjoyed just relaxing on the lanai chatting up our day's adventures with our wonderful hosts. Our room was very cozy and we shared a bathroom with another couple we traveled with. We had access to a fridge, microwave, BBQ, and all the accessories. There's also a wonderful swimming pool in the front of the house to cool off after a nice hike. Ala Kai is a beautiful place in a beautiful location

We have had the most wonderful stay at Ala Kai. With my wife, two kids (3 and 6) and my dad we booked the cabin next to the house for 6 days in the end of August. With the queens in two bedrooms and a queen hide-a-bed sofa in the living room it really was the only choice we could find for the price where we could all sleep comfortably without awkward room sharing. Lots of towels and clean sheets in the closet.

The place has a beautiful and tasteful decor. Full kitchen, not only with pots and stuff but also with some salt, spices and other things you cannot really cook without. They even had an aloe vera lotion for sun burns that was just what I needed. Some books including a very good guide to the island that came in very handy. A TV and DVD that we really did not have time for :). A washer and dryer in the garage with all the liquid soaps and what not. There is no air conditioning but we did not suffer from it at all. We were out all day and at nights the temperature was very pleasant so that we slept with open windows. We did not even used the provided fans. At night there is some loud singing outside that we thought was coming from some birds. To our big surprise these appeared to be frogs :). We actually enjoyed falling asleep listening to this singing but for sensitive sleepers the owners thoughtfully placed ear plugs at the night stands.

The breakfasts we had there were simply the best! My wife and I had the same thought: "OMG, we are in Heaven!" The breakfast was served at the elevated porch (lanai) at the main house facing the ocean with waves crushing on the cliff, coconut trees and a nice swimming pool. The table was set beautifully, even with napkins in little shell holders. The food was hot and delicious. A set of fresh tropical fruit from the backyard was simply spectacular. And if I had a little bit too much, I could take a nap in the hammock right there and then have some more :). Pat and Tracy were the most friendly and accommodating hosts, interesting to talk to and very helpful recommending places on the island to visit.

We will absolutely come back and stay there next time we have a chance.

My wife and I stayed three nights in September and so glad we found this out of the way gem after having reservation issues with another Hilo area B&B. It is just a short ride outside of Hilo, but do use the GPS to find it. Close to Hilo but along the route to the Volcano National Park and closer than Kona to the Mauna Kea observatory, both must sees. Right on the coast, you can watch the waves crash against the shore from the porch where an exquisite breakfast is served, often including fruit grown in the backyard. The Bamboo room is cozy and well equipped for travellers of all types. A small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker allow you to snack or have a light meal on your own schedule and there is a picnic basket with real glasses and dishes for your use. The bathroom is spacious with a great shower. The wonderful hosts stay in the background but also offered advice and suggestions about the area when asked, sending us to probably the best snorkeling spot on that side the island and provided masks and snorkels for use. They also know the local eateries and recommended where to eat with the limited choices locally. The room had a binder with local info and tourist destinations to help you plan. They have a great pool if you want to enjoy a day without leaving the property. Only improvement they could make is adding A/C though it seemed to be an uncommon feature in local B&B as most locals are used to the temps, but there are fans and screens, even a screen door to keep you cool and allow the evening sounds filter in, we loved the frog and rain sounds. They also have a small cottage for families and groups, and a washer and dryer available -we did laundry elsewhere but a great way to cut back luggage, we did just carry-ons with four days of clothes for eight days and since they had practically anything you need besides clothes and toiletries it worked great. If you are a cat lover, your feline host Shakespeare will make your stay just like home. If we could package this B&B and put it in all our travel destinations, we would never stay anywhere else.

Ala Kai B&B was a nice surprise. The place is clean, quiet, comfortable, and you feel home pretty quick. Breakfast are awesome, the owners are friendly, respectful and really kind. The pool is great, and the whole place is adapted to solo, couples or families. If you're looking for a place to get rid of the stress, visit the volcanoes, and enjoy the variety of landscapes in Big Island, it is the place to stay. There is no traffic and the roads seem brand new, so you can even reach the west coast of the island in less than 3 hours (if you need some white sand beaches). A special mention for Shakespeare, the cuddly cat of the house...

Room Tip: The 2 rooms that "share" a bathroom (Aloha and Turtle) are perfectly independent, and the...

My husband, our two teenaged daughters and I experienced a lovely 4 night stay at the Ala Kai B&B. Pat and Mary are friendly and hospitable hosts. Their cat Shakespeare was very friendly too and stopped by each day to "check" on us. We stayed in the two bedroom cottage which was very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful with lots of trees and plants. We enjoyed delicious breakfasts each morning on the lanai of the main house with a view of the ocean across the street. They cheerfully accommodated my aversion to eggs and we really enjoyed the variety of fresh fruit. Pat and Mary even arranged for us to have breakfast a little earlier the morning we left so we could eat there and still have enough time to get to the Hilo airport on time for our morning flight home. Given the opportunity, we'd stay here again.

The Ala Kai B&B was wonderful. We wanted to split our time on the Big Island between the Hilo side and the Kona side, but we were also apprehensive about many of the options closer to Hilo. After scouring TripAdvisor, we decided to give the Ala Kai a try, and we could not have been happier with our choice. We stayed in the cabin behind the main house, and it was like having the best features of a B&B and a vacation rental at the same time. Pat and Mary were great hosts --- the breakfasts were very good, and featured incredibly delicious fresh fruit --- and we availed ourselves to the snorkel equipment and excellent advice for where to go swimming. We also loved the location right by the water, which along this part of the island features dramatic lava formations rather than beaches. By the time we left, we were already planning who we could get to come with us for our next visit!
