“Nice place in need of amenities.”
Reviewed September 25, 2017 for a stay in September 2017

This is a nice house on lovely grounds with a nice pool. However, it does have some drawbacks:
1. We arrived and found there was not the customary "Welcome Book" with directions on how things work, where to go, etc. We didn't really need the "where to go" bit since we've been coming to HPP for years. But there was no info on how to connect to WiFi. Called the management company and they were able to find the code, but if we'd been any later in the day arriving we'd have been out of luck. Seems trivial, I know. But these days... Also asked about the garage since the house has one - but it was locked and no remote was in evidence. Management representative didn't know; offered to check and call back. Never heard from him again. The "secure parking" in the description consists of a canopy next to the garage.
2. The property description said there is an office. The office is locked. I see this has now been removed from the description. Didn't need it - just was surprised it had been so glowingly mentioned.
3. The property is really poorly equipped. There are no drinking glasses, there was no salt, pepper, sugar (we're used to stocking up on some stuff, but really, that's pretty basic stuff. No diswasher detergent either -- but they want you to wash the dishes before you leave (?).
4. Bedrooms are truly minimally furnished - just a bed. No nightstand. No place for luggage except on the floor.
5. Bedsheet on one of the beds was stained. Ugh!
6.Carpet in the dining area has a strand that has come unraveled. About 6"-8" long. You can see it vaguely in the lower right of photo 14. No big deal - but it really should be taken care of.

This property would get 5 stars if it weren't for the above. They could easily be taken care of at minimal expense. I would only recommend this to a friend if they knew about the deficiencies and could accept them. It has much potential, as they say.

Would you recommend this hotel to a friend?   No.

Mahalo for your lengthy and thoughtful review, Forest! We are so very sorry that Paradise Retreat did not meet your expectations! This is a brand new vacation rental, and the owners are still working on the finer points of the décor and furnishings - hence the low price for a place with a pool and a hot tub ;-) While the furnishings are a bit sparse right now, all the rooms are exactly as pictured on the listing, so the disappointment there is a bit puzzling. We hadn’t had a chance to create and deliver the house book yet at the time of your visit, but as you mentioned we are just a phone call away 24/7 whenever a guest needs assistance. We remember your call on the afternoon of 9/7 and letting you know that the owners’ car is stored in the garage so unfortunately we cannot grant access to guests. The secure parking refers to the gated driveway and fully fenced yard, rather than the garage. The office was open when we first saw the house. When the owners decided to use it for personal and housekeeping storage, we removed it right away from the listings, as you said. Housekeeping leaves non-perishable food items that have been left by previous guests. As noted in your welcome letter, we do not provide any food items. We simply don’t have the staff to inventory each kitchen, go shopping, and then make deliveries to each rental after every checkout. Plus once you start providing these types of items, it becomes a slippery slope. Some people need a salt substitute. Some folks like tea instead of coffee. Some people take decaf. And then there’s cream and sugar. You can see how quickly it would get out of hand... For the same reason, and also noted in your welcome letter, we provide items like TP, paper towels, sponges, dish soap, etc, that are enough to cover a shorter stay and ask that guests resupply themselves if they use our provisions. We’ll ask housekeeping to check on the bed sheets – we are surprised because they are all trained to replace stained or torn sheets immediately! A quick call would have got you a new set right away - unlike food and a sundry, we provide all linens, and making sure guests have unstained sheets most certainly IS within our scope of operations ;-) The problem with the carpet is that the vacuum will grab the loose end and snag the carpet much worse if the snag is cut. I have the same carpet in my house, and that’s exactly what happened. It looks a mess :-( Rather risking it, the small strand was simply secured to the floor. We never imagined it would cause a bad review! Mahalo again for providing feedback – we are so grateful when guests take the time to do so! I hope I have adequately addressed your concerns. Take care, and please keep us in mind for future visits to the Big Island.
