Best course on the island in my opinion and not as expensive as the Jack Nicklaus course at the four seasons. The third hole is one I will always remember. Found a better rate online and the pro shop has specials if you combine with a t-shirt or play after 11am. Must do for any golfers on the island. Could only be improved if the buggies had GPS.

Beautiful course, great condition. Staff and service were great. Scenic views. Fun over ocean 3rd hole. Very difficult course. Greens were crazy difficult, undulating and fast with difficult hole placement. Bunker sand so soft that fried eggs were common. Uphill approaches made getting close to hole difficult. Greens are extremely well protected by bunkers. Several blind shots and uneven lies. Husband - 9 handicap and having played over 200 courses and this was the most difficult. Wife - 20 handicap - played 180 courses and this is the most difficult. BUT.... we both thoroughly enjoyed this course and scored 88 and 101 respectively. We would play it again although the cost is prohibitive, $225 each.

Played here several times this trip, and always when on the Big Island. Beautiful course with many changes of elevation throughout. People in the pro shop are great! Not very many people playing the course the two days we played. Played in @ 3 1/2 hours which was nice. Hole #3 Par 3 over the ocean is awesome!! Rates reasonable if you stay at the Mauna Kea or Hapuna hotels.

We played a twilight round at Mauna Kea. The course is very difficult; the greens are unforgiving, but without exception, my round there was a treat beyond description. Everything-- the staff, the greens, the cold towels on the cart, the bag markers with our names engraved--was so over the top that the price was worth it. I will always cherish those 18 holes of golf and hope to come back next year. Whoever is running the golf course understands marketing and the little touches...Thank you!

We wanted to take an amazing trip to Kona for our 20th anniversary. We searched around a lot and ended up with rental house off VRBO so we could have access to our own full kitchens, great location near 2 of the best beaches (Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach) and great golfing. We spent 10 days there and had the time of our lives. One of our very best vacations ever. We saved for a long time so we could everything our heart desired on the Big Island. We went with my best friend, her husband and our two boys.

The one and only think I would change and never do again is taking the boat out to see the lava tubes. We did this the very first day on Kona and had to drive around the island to Hilo. It was a treacherous ride and we had to laugh to keep from crying. Calling it a rough ride or that you might get wet is a gross understatement. We we worried our kids would literally pop out of the boat. Our bodies hurt we were holding on so tight. The ride back we were so wet, we might as well have jumped in the water. Not one inch of us was dry. We fortunately had a change of clothes for the 3 hour plus drive back to our side of the island. We loved the photos we took, but would not repeat that boat ride again.

Every other experience was amazing. Can't say which beach we loved more between Hapuna and Mauna Kea. They are both wonderful and my boys loved snorkeling every chance they had. They swam with turtles, had a close call with an eel and found a great pair of Ray Bans in the water. We had breathtaking sunsets every night from our back patio, loved cooking dinner and just enjoying the Hawaii vibe. We rented a jeep and had fun exploring the Kohala Coast.

One of the main highlights was the zipline tour. Couldn't believe my boys talked me into it, but I would not have missed it. Very picturesque and thrilling. Although we also took a helicopter trip to see the lava, it was a little too queasy of a ride for me. We shopped and enjoyed all the different shops, homemade jams, easy access to Costco for meals, the Mauna Kea spa and the luau. We fell head over heels in love with the Big Island and could literally live there. We can't wait to return in 2014. Next time we will stay in Puako which we didn't discover until our last day. What a treasure. We took more photos than any other vacation. Aloha!
