“Excellent Value and Very Relaxing”
Reviewed January 14, 2007

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights in late December. This was our second stay at Hale Ho’onanea. Melanie and Bruce are friendly hosts and do a great job managing their B&B. The area is very peaceful with good views of the ocean. It is also a great location for watching the sunset and star gazing at night. We stayed in the Bamboo Suite which is very clean and spacious. We always have a relaxing stay here. The bed and fluffy pillows are very comfy. The bathroom is very clean and has a spacious shower. The large fluffy bath towels are great. Breakfast is good and is provided in a basket the day before. This is great for us since it allows us to have breakfast whenever we like. Breakfast includes freshly baked delicious homemade bread (varies by day), fresh tropical fruit (pineapple or papaya), cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, juice, coffee (or tea if you prefer), and milk (Melanie is happy to provide skim milk if you prefer). Snacks are also included (microwave popcorn and macadamia nuts). Hale Ho’onanea is an excellent value for the Big Island. We will definitely continue to stay here. In fact, we have already booked our next stay!

We were very pleased with our visit to Hale Ho'onanea. The pictures do not do it justice. Our group of 4 adults stayed in the Palm and the Bamboo suites. We could have been comfortable in the Bamboo Suite but it was nice having 2 bathrooms.
The weather was hot when we arrived but once the winds picked up, the cross ventilation and fans made the suite very comfortable. And the birds singing and fresh breezes made the mornings so delightful.
The suites were spotlessly clean and held anything that we needed. The audio system - cable I think - is great and greeted us with beautiful Hawaiian music. So we had music in one suite and TV in the other. That made us all happy. In both suites there are lots of books, games and videos and local information including history of the island.
The view of the ocean off the Bamboo Suite deck is beautiful. I really wanted to just veg on the deck for a day or two.
Every day Melanie would bring us fresh fruit, juice, cereal and homemade breakfast breads and mac nut snacks for the day. We were totally satisfied with breakfast. I asked for skim milk and POG juice and she happily provided it for us.

We would definitely go back.

We've gone back to Hale Ho'o'nanea several times now, and it keeps getting better. Hosts Melanie and Bruce Biddle are a delight. At 1000 feet elevation, it's cooler and way less humid than the resort coast (which we've sampled at length), and you can see sunsets in the Pacific every day of the year. We like the Milky Way at night and the occasional bleat of a lamb during the day. If there's a better buy on the Big Island, we haven't found it yet, and that's not for want of looking.

The "Tranquility" room we stayed in had a converted basement or garage feeling. The owners should have furred-out the cinder block foundation walls for a warmer feel and less basement like. They have let untrimmed oleander bushes block much of the ocean view from the patio unless you are standing, and they have you park your car in front of the patio, so you are looking at your car when lounging. Not my idea of tranquility. We felt that the owner was not very friendly, but down to business, got our VISA card, and was gone for the rest of our stay, kind of like we were imposing on her. The breakfast that is left in your room the afternoon before, was mostly junk food. We are frequent Big Island visitors, so we expected the arid, desert like environment at this part of the island, but others might have other expectations in Hawaii. Lots of tiny ants quickly apear for the smallest crumb of food, and chances are that they will get to your breakfast basket before you do. On the plus side, the Kohola coast down the big hill is fantastic, and the rate is not to bad as an alternative to the beach resorts. The bathroom was nicely done. Maybe one of the other units that have adjacent lawn, instead of dirt and gravel would be better. I think much of the ambience, or lack of, is a reflection of the owners, who choose to emphasize the cable TV, sugar flakes, and parking right next to your door, more than aloha.

In early April we stayed for several nights in their lovely Bamboo Suite. What a magnificent choice this proved to be. Their website photos do not do justice to the beauty of this BB. The Bamboo suite is large, very clean and provided us with a very comfortable home away from home. Melanie, our host was nearby if we needed anything, was very friendly and even stopped in one evening to put milk in the fridge for coffee. The view from the lanai was breathtaking-mountains on one side and the clear blue Pacific on the other, we made dinner on their bbq both nights. They have ammenties such as a fully stocked kitchen with cooking items and towels and supplies for a day at the beach. Hapuna beach is not far from here and its a must visit destination. Our sleep was quiet and restful as their is almost no traffic in the area. Breakfast items included coffee, fruit and home made goodies but we did a little shopping for dinner and had items for breakfast. After a full day in the surf the quiet and peacefulness of this BB was just what we needed in the evening. There were a few other guests at the time there, but were hardly noticed them as the configuration of the suites maximized privacy. If you are looking in the Kohala area, try this lovely place out. Its easy to get to and added beauty to our visit.

The hosts are very friendly and welcoming. For me, that makes it worth another visit. If you don't feel comfortable here, take my word for it, it's you, not them. Therapy and/or medication might be a good idea.

I type this on location. They have high-speed internet, wire and wireless, in each unit.

We are here about the warmest part of the year: end of May - beginning of June. The lack of air conditioning is not a problem. It cools-off considerably in the evening. They have beautiful grounds and an incredible view of the whole west coast. Hint: For relaxation, position one of the portable hammocks in the shade with a view and the cooling trade winds. Aaaaaah ...

I vote with the vast majority on the quality of this B&B.

Just returned from a 12 nights stay on the Big Island. We stayed 5 nights at the Hale Ho'onanea B&B located on the beautiful North Kohala coast.

This B&B is in a community neighborhood of homes with acreage high on a hill overlooking the North Kohala coastline. It is a beautiful view from the lanai. This alone might qualify this B&B as above average. The B&B is about 10 minutes from the beaches. There aren't many ammenities in this area except a local one stop store and 3 restaurants.

Brice and Melanie acquired this 3 units B&B 2 years ago from the original owners. This young couple have been working diligently to make this a better B&B. The results of their endeavors are evident outside with the yard and landscaping. The resident cat, Goldie, is a helpful companion.

We stayed in the largest unit which is actually a 1 bedroom cottage. It is furnished nicely with a sleep sofa, table and chairs, small kitchen with a microwave but no stove. The kitchen is functional but could have more ammenities such as measuring cups and teaspoons as well as casserole type dishes to use in the microwave and on the brand new grill. The dishes and silverware are new.

The other 2 units are smaller. One is located underneath the larger one and isn't for people who might be claustrophobic. The other unit stand alone and appears bright and cheery.

Our unit had a bedroom with a king bed but the mattress swayed inward. It wasn't too comfortable. The pillows were FLAT and foam uncomfortable for one of us . New pillows really are needed! The bed linens are changed every 3 days. The first set of bed linens were knit, something we found uncomfortable. The day of linen change, upon lifting the mattress,we found large ants! We notified the hostess who graciously took the bed apart and upon our advice turned the mattress over. This did help with the bed mattress being more comfortable. Time for a new mattress? As to the ants there was the statement that this had never happened before and weren't there when clean linens were put on the bed before our arrival. Did someone actually raise the mattress when putting on the linens? The blanket on the bed looked like it hadn't been freshly laundered in awhile, due to some discoloration at the headboard area, but was done at our request after the ant incident.

The bath has a shower that is spacious and the towels were fluffy and thick! I plan to get some for our use at home. There was also shampoo, conditioner and lotion something not always found in B&B's. A nice touch!

The cottage has a TV and VCR and a grill on the lanai. Comfortable outdoor chairs are great on the lanai to sit and watch the world go by! There are beach mats, chairs, towels and coolers provided for the beach. Another nice touch!

Breakfast was delivered by the hostess each day. This consisted of cereals, hot chocolate, milk for cereal, coffee, homemade breads ( the Pina Colada is to die for), fruit and nuts. The hostess might do well by asking her guests prior to check in if they have any food preferences (this was done at another Hawaii B&B we stayed in). The items would then be available at check in. We use skim milk and went and bought it. We requested raisin bran cereal and it was promptly in our box in a day. The only breakfast comment might be the "juice" in the cans wasn't 100% juice but juice drink with sugar and more sugar and 10% juice. A variety of other breakfast items for a long stay would be good-the same gets old after 2 or 3 days. The basket delivery was nice as it afforded us the opportunity to eat when we wanted. A variety of cereals without sugar would be welcome.

Overall this young couple is trying to upgrade there B&B to better standards. In time they might do it! I won't rule them out for a future stay once they get over some hurdles. Time and a little more work might just make them a 4 star B&B. Good luck to this young couple!

Kohala gets very little rain about 8 inches a year. We were lucky to have almost all that amount in the time we spent at Kohala. So keep this in mind when one reads about the sunny Kohala coast. It sometimes does rain.
