Waipio Valley is outstanding. It is an intense hike down as others say, but every couple of feet you are treated to an absolutely amazing and different view into the valley. It takes a long time to get down; do not be in a rush to get there, enjoy the trip!

When you get to the bottom, if you veer left you come up to amazing views of the waterfalls in the distance. If you veer right you come up to the coast. To the right be aware and prepared for mosquitoes as you head through the lush landscape.

Remember that you are on what is scared ground to the Hawaiians. Be respectful of that, and respectful of the privacy of those that choose to live in the valley. I was appalled to see people photographing some of the homes in the valley and making jokes. It is actions like that that end up closing these types of beautiful spaces to non-locals.

The way up takes some time and is a bit intense so make sure and save some water!

A tip for when hiking steep grades is to walk in a zig zag instead of straight up or down. You may think you look ridiculous but it takes all the stress off your knees.

Great look out of one of the most beautiful valleys in Hawaii. If you have off road vehicle with really good breaks I recommend going down and checking out the beautiful black sand beach. There is a waterfall in the back of the valley you can see from the road once your inside the valley but unless you have a local guide I would not recommend trekking in by yourself. There are companies that do horseback riding, atv, and wagon tours that will help you access a lot of the areas you legally aren;t allowed to, plus it helps support local business. I did camp there as a kid but I believe they don't allow it anymore but if you just park your car up top and hopefully hitch a ride down you can 'camp' on the other side of the river with no trouble. Just make sure you clean up after! Porter-pottys and trashcans available on beach side.

A beautiful and spectacular lookout, with history plaques. The Big Island is so diverse with its volcanos, beaches and this awe inspiring valley. A 'must see'.

Waipio Valley is beautiful. There is a lookout which is very well marked and at end of road.

If you decide to drive down the 25%grade winding road, they post you need 4 wheel drive. YES, that is correct. Don't drive it in your rental car if not 4 wheel like we did. Everyone looked at us like we were nuts. I did get out of the car going back up the steep steep road as it was just stupid!!! I walked back up the road, it it was a very steep hike to say the least.

If you decide to walk to bottom have good, lots of water and closed toe shoes. As I was walking up the hill to meets husband who drove the car back some people were walking down in sandles!!!! Do not do so, your feet won't last!!!!
