This Hotel was affordable, but filthy. Unfortunately, it wasn't quiet & private as it should be. You can hear other guests talking & laughing loudly into the wee hours of the night. No one does anything about it. The Rooms have near ceiling-windows that only have a screen on them, therefore, you can hear everything that goes on out in the hallways. If you're unlucky enough to have noisy neighbors, you're in for a sleepless night! Be afraid to complain!! The Manager there is totally disrespectful & hostile! Her unprofessional demeanor & disregard for her Customers was unbelieveable and uncalled for by any standard! When you're in the Service Industry, you don't treat your Customers in this way. We were apalled by her behavior. What a horrid experience & person!

This was my favorite place I stayed on the Big Island, and the rest were all great values: Volcano House (Volcano), Kona Seaside (Kona), Dolphin Bay (Hilo). Honokaa Club is the 2nd oldest hotel in Hawaii, the oldest being in Honolulu. The managers were super-nice and helpful. The more you like old buildings (kept in decent shape) and the “grandma’s-house” feel, the more you’ll like the Honokaa Club. My room had a huge picture window overlooking the ocean a mile or so away, had a private bathroom, and was only about $60 before tax, a steal I thought. It’s on the wet side of the island. It was pouring when I arrived & sporadically throughout the night. That’s just what I wanted, coming from Seattle where I like the rain as much as the sun. The town of Honokaa is bucolic too, and well-situated for exploring scenic Waipo Valley. The pineapple upside-down cake at the Mamane St. Bakery went well with the cappuccino, especially since the temp was 65 rather than 80 as elsewhere near the coast. If you want to see the best parts of the Big Island and like historic towns & hotels, don’t miss the Honokaa Club.

We made a roadtrip around the Big Island, so were just looking for "places to sleep"...hostel, B & B, that sort of thing. Best things about this place was that it was quiet because very few people were there (May), clean and the manager was great, very accomodating.
However, it was old, so if you are squeamish about old bathroom fixtures, etc, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a clean reasonalbly priced place to stay, I would recommend it.
