Hale Hualalai Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #3 of 6 Holualoa B&B and Inns

We stayed at Lonn's B&B for 6 nights in November 2009. We were warmly welcomed and Lonn made us feel right at home from the start. Each morning we were greeted with fresh ground coffee and exceptional breakfasts. Lonn was very hospitable and took the time to share with us his knowledge of the island and tips for getting around. He pointed us to the public beach at the Four Seasons for green turtles and they were there upon arrival! Lonn gave us our privacy but was willing to socialize and talk story with us. If you enjoy coffee you will not be disappointed with his home-grown coffee. We couldn't get enough. We saw various wildlife around his place and the geckos are even friendly. The sunsets from his Lanai were fabulous. The B&B is very convenient to the Kona airport and we had no trouble driving all over the island. Make sure you ask for Lonn's recommendations on where to eat on the island.

Lonn was very nice and the breakfasts (freshly picked fruit and juice along with an egg dish each morning) were the best we had on the island. The views are stellar- sunsets from your own private balcony overlooking the coffee and fruit trees and the resident dog is a sweetheart. Lonn has a telescope set up as well as countless guidebooks to the big island for his guests to enjoy. The only small criticism I could give is that it would be nice to have tissues (kleenex) in the bathroom area. Aside from that (very tiny thing) it was perfect!

This place is as close as it gets to staying with a close male friend on the Big Island, in his awesome guest suite. Private spacious room separate from main house, large bath with huge tub, wet bar/fridge, very private lanai with incredible sunset view, and a terrific, laid-back host. My husband loved it here, because the owner, Lonn, does a great job of balancing service and attention with space and privacy, making it a very easy, comfortable place to spend time. This place is not precious or pretentious; the furniture is not hand carved in Bali and the bath soap is not hand-milled using local goat milk. If you are looking for the Four Seasons of B&B's this is not likely to be your speed. But if you want a great view and a large comfy room close to many attractions, a great bed, amazing coffee, a delicious hearty breakfast, and lots of space where no one will mess with your stuff while you're out, Hale Hualalai is perfect. Lonn is a great host, and a great cook, and we will most certainly return!

Our stay at Lonn's really couldn't have been much better. Lonn was a wonderful host, smoothly balancing friendliness with respect for our privacy. The view was terrific, and the room was spacious with a large bath area, whirlpool tub, king bed, sitting/kitchen area with fridge, and a private lanai. And the breakfasts...WOW! Lonn nimbly took into consideration our preferences and allergies and made some of the most mouthwatering dishes we could have hoped for. Barring taking Lonn home with us, his generous sharing of recipes and tips from his days as a chef were the next best thing. If you could call it a downside, I guess the fact that we didn't leave the breakfast table and Lonn's entertaining and informative stories until much later in the day than we had planned for sightseeing could qualify. But what a treat that our host could be so genial and flexible. Thank you, Lonn. We look forward to a return visit.

I’d love to live in Hawaii and see such a beautiful sunset everyday…that’s how you feel when you stay at Hale Hualalai.
Upon my trip to the Big Island, I thought “why stay at a hotel bustling with tourists?” So I searched for a nice quiet B & B close to the Kona Airport and found that Hale Hualalai had the best reviews in the area. I’m glad I found Hale Hualalai because unlike the predictable buffet style hotel breakfasts, Lonn’s special breakfast menus and home-grown coffee was excellent! My mother is a coffee lover, but due to a weak stomache she usually cannot drink much of it, but Lonn’s 100% Kona coffee was an exception. Lonn hand picks only the red ripe matured coffee beans, one by one. That keeps the bitterness and strong acid flavor out, and the mellowness in. My mother loved Lonn’s coffee so much that we bought some to take home.
Hale Hualalai is located in the higher living areas of the island and therefore very quiet and private. We drove up to the coffee belt altitude and found the small sign for the B & B and turned into a private driveway passing 2 houses. Keep going and you will find the parking area and entrance to Hale Hualalai, a cute yellow house, where Doogs, a peaceful little watch dog, and Lonn will be waiting to greet you. Most guests at Lonn’s B & B are couples or married folks. I stayed with my mother as it was a mother and daughter vacation, and Lonn was very kind and offered any kind of assistance we may need during our stay.
Staying at a B & B is very different from staying at a resort hotel as it will be more like staying at a friend’s home. A VERY BEAUTIFUL friend’s home. Anything you may need to enjoy your stay is provided, so you just need to bring snacks and water to put into the mini fridge. Air conditioners aren’t necessary because the ceiling fan and high altitude is all you need to be comfortable and cool, even in July.
In the daytime, Lonn is usually out in his property caring for his coffee trees and fruits, so if you need anything you just need to call out to him. Lonn does not speak any Japanese but has family members living in Japan and he welcomes guests from Japan, so you don’t have to worry if you don’t speak much English.
For staying on the island, I recommend a rental car preferably with a Navigator. The meeting place to join tours to the Mauna Kea Summit and Volcanoe Park are in the Kona shopping area and an easy 10 min drive with some downhill curves from the B & B. There is a Brewery and restaurant called Kona Brewery and some nice restaurants close to the beach in Kailua Kona. A great beach for seeing Sea Turtles is about 25 min from the B & B. You should be aware that the Hawaiian law prohibits the Sea Turtles to be touched or harmed in any way. There are many beautiful beaches on the Kona side to enjoy and my mother and I had a great time in Kona and Hilo.
If you would like to enjoy a gourmet breakfast cooked especially for you, with fresh fruits, and home grown Kona coffee.
If you prefer a quiet private stay rather than a busy hotel packed with numerous families.
If you love beautiful sunsets and a relaxed atmosphere. Hale Hualalai is for you.

This was our 3rd B&B we stayed at on our honeymoon and we loved it! There are only 2 suites and they are on opposite ends of the building so they are very private. We loved the spaciousness of the suite and the private lanai with views of the Kona coastline. The breakfasts were huge and DELICIOUS. We definitely recommend this place!

My husband and I stayed at Hale Hualalai Bed and Breakfast during our 4-day visit to the Big Island on our honeymoon. Lonn was a wonderful host, and the Hale Hualalai was terrific. There is an incredible view from the lanai to the ocean, and our room was very clean and comfortable. Having our own private small lanai was a bonus and really nice treat. The breakfasts Lonn prepared for us were homemade and spectacular; we left for our daily adventures stuffed to the gills every day. I especially enjoyed the fresh squeezed orange juice made from the oranges picked right in his back yard! We found Lonn completely willing to work with our schedule, which was important since we wanted to explore all we could during our limited time there. Even at 7 am, the food was hot and ready to go when we were! I would highly recommend Hale Hualalai to anyone visiting Hawaii.

The coffee, which is grown on the property, was very good.

Lonn is was very handy with directions to events or places to see. The B and B is close to Kona but not too close.

When we go back we will call Lonn.
