We came to the Island of Hawaii to see some friends who where visiting as well. They heard about this place from others visitors while we were hanging out at the pool. Went for lunch and very much enjoyed the food and service was great. Our server was very accommodating to some special requests made by members if our party. Service was prompt, efficient and very friendly. Food was great, Would definitely return!!

We arrived at 7:00 and by 9:30 we still hadn't been served our meal. We were served a lukewarm bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (we had to put ice in it). I know the food is good (I'd love to have tried it!), but it's not worth the service.

Living in Kona, we have learned to accept that service will be slow and indifferent, and the food mediocre, but our dining experience at the Holuakoa Cafe on August 1 took things to a new low. The bottom line is that the service was extremely slow (1.5 hours from time we sat down until we saw food - while others around us who got there later than us were being served well before us), the service came with a healthy side of attitude, and the $49 steak (special of the evening) I ordered was undercooked from what I ordered, and too tough to eat. This was a special occasion evening and we were treating friends to this, so we were pretty disappointed. We have been to this restaurant a number of times in the past. While I have always thought the menu was slightly overrated, it does have a nice setting (bring your own insect repellant during bug season) and in the past the service was passable. However based on this experience we will not return.

Recommended by friends from CA. Good choice. Passing it on to others in the area. Parking is a challenge. Mosquitos were around due to recent rains.

I was looking for a place "off the beaten path" and found it at Holuakoa Cafe in Holualoa, Hawaii. It is just up the hill from downtown Kona, but a world away. We went for dinner, so the jungle noises and light rain (yes, the rain actually added to the ambiance!) pitter-pattering on the tin roof, combined with white table cloth and jazz music made the setting feel right out of a novel. And to top it off, the food was superb. I think they are part of the "slow food" movement, which basically means everything served is local. Make sure to cap off the evening with their amazing flourless chocolate tort and a glass of port--WOW!!!
