“Good location, great breakfast”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

Just spent 3 nights at the Dolphin Bay Hotel. All of the staff were nice and very helpful in planning on what to visit around Hilo. For breakfast they had coffee and juice, wonderful banana bread, fresh bananas and papayas - all were excellent. It was just a short walk into the main part of town with lots of restaurants, the farmers' market, theaters, etc. Free WiFi and a small kitchen in our room. They also had a washer and dryer ($1.50 & $1.00) which was useful. Will definitely plan on staying there again.

This hotel has a lot going for it. Nestling on a secluded road within easy walking distance of Hilo centre, you have all the amenities you need for an extended stay (including full kitchen facilities), as well as the perks of the tropical garden and the free fresh fruit available daily. Most impressive of all was the courteous and friendly service from all staff, who displayed a real enthusiasm for the area and provided useful advice and recommendations throughout our stay.

This is an old fashioned hotel. However, that is not something to complain about because that's considered in the price. I paid 120 each night for 2 nights. 40 minute drive to volcanoes. Lots of restaurans within a mile drive. This hotel does not serve a standard breakfast. Only coffee, banana bread, bananas and papaya are included in breakfast. I would recommend that this hotel improve the wifi. It hardly works.

Unfortunately we only had one night in this delightful spot and most of the time we were there we were out in the gardens trying to get the best shots of gorgeous flowers and little geckos which my children loved. We have returned home with some fabulous photos but just a word of advice, make sure you use some insect repellent first!
The accommodation was basic but very adequate for our short stay for a family of 4 with a queen and single bed in the main bedroom and 2 single beds in the lounge. Unfortunately it was an incredibly hot day and my husband struggled without aircon so please bear this in mind if it is important to you.
The hosts were lovely, very welcoming and informative and we were lucky to be in Hilo for the Farmers Market (every Wed and Sat) which we thoroughly enjoyed. The food at the cafe there was very good too!
Excellent base for visiting the volcano, tree frogs were noisey but didn't cause us a problem - the kids sleep through anything and I used the earplugs provided!

This is an older place that appears to have been little apartments at one point-but that means you get a nice little kitchen in your room. It's in a residential area a few blocks from downtown Hilo. Things are un-fancy and older, but everything works, and is kept clean. The staff is friendly and helpful -like the lady who convinced me that I really did need to take an umbrella, and why it would be much better than my raincoat. And recommended restaurants only the locals know. They made every effort to make you feel very much at home.

Beds were ok for comfort-but not great -and they even got good TV channels on the nights I stayed in. No AC-but that really is OK. There are coquis in the area, but they quiet down before its too late.

Great place to stay in Hilo. Received a great welcome and lots of practical and useful information from our host, John. Where to go, where to eat in the evening, best museums - lots of local knowledge.

We stayed in the annex across the road from the main part of the hotel - loads of room and the property included a living room and kitchen. All very clean and tidy. Plenty of parking outside.

Breafast was quite fun - kona machine with plenty of coffee, freshly baked banana loaf and an assortment of tropical fruits - just help yourself ! Very friendly and homely and all on a manageable scale. Would highly recommend

Room Tip: Probably worth checking directions to the hotel. We found it without difficulty but it could be easy...

Great hotel for family that doesn't need pampering. In-room kitchen, laundry on property. More apartment than hotel. Owner gives great guidance on local sights if you need them, provides fresh banana bread and fruit in the AM. Nice gardens on the property. Love the singing frogs at night! So much to see on the rainy, less touristy side of the Big Island. There seems to be some lower income property close by, but wasn't an issue.
