“Stayed Here for Month of September 2011”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2011

I stayed here for the month of September in one of their one bedroom units. Large, comfortable with all the amenities -and I mean all - even had glass wine glasses. Toaster broke on me, they replaced it that same day with a brand new one still in the box.
Great location 3 blocks to downtown Hilo - 9 blocks to the Farmer's Market.
In the Hotel lobby for all the guests Coffee - papaya - limes - bananas on the stock - Danish pastry ALL FREE each morning. Bring the coffee mug in your room with you ( a small plate too)
John ( the owner ) and John ( not the owner ) were fantastic hosts. The staff we friendly and always helpful. Place was clean I had a full size fridge and 30" stove in my suite - even had a blender. I picked bananas off the stock - froze them also froze fresh strawberries and had great smoothies for breakfast.
HINT: take the address and phone number of the place - go to Safeways tell them you want the card tell them you live at the address ( don't mention Dolphin Bay) One puchase with the card reduced my bill from U$80 down to U$ 60.
You will love the place I did and I will go back to Dolphin Bay Hotel!

Room Tip: Hotel rooms are nice for short stays - one bedroom fantastic for long stays They also have 2 bedro...

We landed here after an appalling experience at a rental beach house and found not just a place to stay, but also genuine care and comfort. This place isn't fancy, simply highly attuned to the welfare of guests. Room is clean and light, love the endless supply of fresh papayas! John and his staff know the island and share their tips generously. In fact, generous is the term that best applies to Dolphin Bay.

A great welcome on arrival from fiendly (family?) staff. We had a comfortable suite, no AC but thro breeze and fans were fine. Good WiFi with an intriguing password! Plentiful fresh fruit from the tropical garden was freely available to the guests, wow do home grown papayas and bananas taste good! After Honolulu this was a great retreat away from the bustle of the city. It is close to the airport but we never noticed any flights comming in or out. The town of Volcano and the National Park are a comfortable 30-40 minute drive from Hilo. The drive to the Mauna Kea mountain visitors centre was exciting and well rewarded with dedicated volunteers explaining the night sky constellations high above the clouds. The hotel staff will tell you all about the things to see and do just make sure you have enough time on this side of the island to enjoy them. There is a good range of shops and eateries close-by. The sea, black sand beaches, turtles and coastal bay parks just up the coast were beautiful. Everyone we met was friendly and engaging.

Room Tip: The suite above the office was roomy and comfortable.

Just out of Hilo. Walking distance to downtown. Comfortable room. NO AC, but both ceiling and wall fans make it perfectly comfortable. Everyone we dealt with from the owner to everyone at the desk could not have been more helpful. Expained the best places to go in Volcano National Park. Restaurant suggestions were right on as well.

Off street parking as it is in a neighborhood. Has its own tropical garden. Breakfast was OK. Fresh fruit and fresh pastry. Coffee and Tea.

It truly was like staying at a friend's home.

I stepped back in time at the Dolphin Bay. The facilities are definitely mid-century, but rather than finding it dated, I found it charming, especially in comparison to the modern blandness of the resorts on the Kohala coast. The staff are friendly and helpful, like I always hope hotel staff will be (but hardly ever are), and the location is perfect for getting around Hilo and the area around it. We started each day with delicious pastries and ended it by listening to the coqui frogs. I couldn't ask for anything better.

The coqui frogs are amazing. Assuming they are calling for mates, it was a little sad that by morning one lone frog was still singing, still looking for love. The Dolphin Bay is just like Hilo, sort of mom & pop, a little working class, but comforting and inviting and feels like home--the kind of home where the neighbor kids would hang out because your mom always had homemade cookies and their moms were uptight about sugar. Instead of cookies, at Dolphin Bay you can gorge yourself with papayas and bananas and delicious pastries every morning. Our suite had a nice bedroom, living room, kitchen, and decent bathroom. Parking is easy, downtown Hilo just a short walk away, and the lush grounds are protected by Rubble, the hotel cat.

Visited this hotel based on the trip adviser comments. The staff and garden atmosphere make this a perfect getaway. It was a five minute walk to downtown but a secluded hotel that felt like you are in a rainforest. In the morning there is delicious coffee and pastries. The staff has picked guava, mango and banana for anyone to take. This is a very comfortable hotel and left with 10 avocados picked from the tree on the property. The front desk encourage you to consult them and treat them as a concierge for info about waterfalls, volcanoes, and great breakfast joints. Every room has a full size kitchen with coffee maker, toaster, fridge, stove, microwave, etc. Flat screen tv, and all around nice atmosphere. Will be back for sure!

Room Tip: There are several size rooms, all have kitchens.
