There are not enough superlatives to describe this great place! We two retired couples enjoyed a week's stay in Jan. '15 immensely. This property is the best value on the Big Island. Lots of space, inside and out. Very conveniently located for exploring Volcanoes NP, Puna, Hilo, Mauna Kea, and the Hamakua Coast. It's also great if you just want to lounge on the large lanai, swim in your private swimming pool, or roam the extensive tropical grounds.
The cottage consists of two large private master bedroom suites separated by a living/dining/kitchen area. Each suite has a spacious bedroom connected to a separate roomy bathroom. Each bedroom also has its own outside entrance as well as connecting to the living area. The baths have showers but no tubs.
Practical Matters: The cottage is about 100 yards from the parking area at the end of a brick walk. If you plan on arriving after dark or returning at night, be sure you have flashlights. There is very little lighting along the walk. Large windows let plenty of daylight into the cottage, but the small curtains leave you feeling a little exposed at night (there are no other buildings close by and foliage does provide some screening). Laundry facilities are not located in the cottage itself. They are about 80 yards away down the brick walk in a latticework room under the main house. There is a very modern front loading washing machine, a large modern dryer and a older top loading washer. Only one roll of toilet paper was provided in each bathroom and no soap for the shower, so don't be "caught short". All plumbing worked well. Our party enjoyed being serenaded to sleep by Coque frogs and awakened in the morning by roosters. Some may not.
There is a pharmacy, supermarket, gas station, farmers market, hardware store, Thai restaurant, and McDonald's about a mile away in Kea'au. A large Hilo shopping area is about 8 miles away. The Kea'au supermarket is Foodland. Foodlands are found throughout Hawai'i. If you plan to do any grocery shopping, I highly recommend that you get the Foodland shopper's card during your first visit. It offers significant saving on many items (Hawai'i prices are high!). Getting the card is no hassle and is issued on-the-spot at the checkout register.
Finally, your hostess, Gisella, is welcoming, accommodating, and helpful. She provided fresh flowers for the dining table and advice about our sightseeing. This place is a gem!
