Fascinating exhibits. Very helpful staff. Great info on the voyages of the Polynesians who read the stars.

Very detailed exhibits are both kid-friendly and extremely detailed for all ranges of intellectual curiosity. I don't care much about astronomy and physics, and yet I found myself here for over 2.5 hours absorbing all of it. We went to the Skies Above Hawaii and Mauna Kea planetarium shows, and they were both different and fascinating. The Mauna Kea show was especially nice given that our Mauna Kea stargazing tour had gotten cancelled due to wind. The Skies Above Hawaii program is new, a live narration program given by a docent who is clearly loves her job.

If you are into Astronomy, yes I would go and visit, but don't expect the Smithsonian. It is a nice little museum with an good planetarium that offers a selection of shows. You don't need much time there. The show would be about the longest activity, but you could allow for 2 hours of time to fully review the exhibits and take in a show. It is not cheap, so if you are looking for budget things to do while playing tourist, you might skip this one. The grounds and property is very nice and enjoyable to walk around. There is a cafeteria, but not sure of what is offered or if it is any good. It is right outside of Hilo Bay, but does require some navigation to get to.

My wife and I stumbled upon the Astronomy center after finding the cafe on google and having lunch there. It is amazing and there is so much cool things to see and learn about. Our guide, Tony, was excellent and helped direct us to some of the most interesting displays and interactive exhibits. I would also recommend the shows as the one we say was awesome and the young lady that presented it was on point. We could have stayed all day so when planning a trip make sure you give yourself at least 3 hours to really explore!

With the Mauna Kea Visitor Center closed, we did the next best thing by visiting here. The astronomy exhibits and the planetarium shows were fun. But most impressive were the exhibits about Hawaiian history and how the Polynesians arrived here, describing their navigation techniques including a model canoe. The docents were very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall a great visit.
