I visited with a tour group. We had a delicious buffet lunch in the restaurant. We then watched a 3D presentation in the planetarium which was very informative. We were also fortunate to have a presentation by a very knowledgeable staff person on a globe which can show a variety of historical weather patterns and geological events. I highly recommend this center, especially if you can arrange to see a staff presentation

We were looking for a place to visit to fill in an afternoon that we didn't have plans for. We saw this advertised and decided to take a chance. We are glad we did. It is more than just a museum and planetarium. A show in the planetarium is included in the price, but the attraction lies in the varied presentations in the museum itself. Very well done and varied in the subject manner. All the displays seem new and updated.

My husband and i chanced upon this place cos we wanted to check out the beautiful cone-shaped roofs that caught our eyes. This place was very welcoming and had exhibits and shows to entertain us. The Hawaiian culture is nicely presented in the exhibit hall. We lucked out cos we were able to listen in on a staff presenting to a group of students in the exhibition area. There’s a huge globe in the area that has large data and can show different visuals, from flight paths and earthquakes to tsunamis and climate change around the world. We also enjoyed the presentation given in a smaller room inside the exhibit area called Cybercanoe. The planetarium show was good and was fun listening to the talk given by the planetarium operator that followed immediately after the show. For a small town like Hilo, it is amazing there’s a beautiful facility such as Imiloa!

Too afraid of getting sick going up to the summit of Mauna Kea like me? Well then relax and head over to the Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. The planetarium shows are all excellent. Emily the astronomer gave us great tours of the night skies of Hawaii. She is enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

The exhibits in the museum area are as much focused on Hawaiian culture as on astronomy, but that adds to the experience in my view. The gift shop actually has some 6 and 10 inch reflector telescopes for sale - kudos to them for stocking some real astronomy items!

Overall a very good experience and worth a few hours of anyone's time. Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to study astronomy and as the exhibits make clear has been a central and important part of traditional Hawaiian culture for centuries.

Go see the planetarium show and the museum there. Don't forget the restaurant.
One of my favorite places in Hilo.
