We toured with Josh and he was FANTASTIC--my husband and I joined another family of 6. We had a fantastic day. Started at the national park and got to walk and see a ton of the new features since the eruption in May. Learned so much about the history of the island, culture, agriculture, etc. He was up for less or more walking depending on what the group wanted (we wanted more) and we really really enjoyed our tour! Thanks Josh!!

Both the Hamakua coast and volcano national park tours were exceptional. Family owned business keeping tour groups small so you get a great experience. Friendly local guides happy to share their knowledge.

Josh and Jill were great from the moment we booked, until the end of the tour. I have travelled to over 35 countries and Josh is one of the most stand out tour guides I have ever had. Their website/booking process was professional and easy to navigate. They had great follow up prior to the tour and most importantly were great the day of. The value of the tour was excellent. This husband/wife team is top notch!

My husband and I had an amazing day with Josh on their Full Day Volcano Adventure Tour! Josh was born and raised on the Big Island, he is very passionate about his homeland and its history. This is a complete tour including Volcano National Park, Rainbow Falls, Lunch and so much more! I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Island, especially to those arriving by Cruise Ship!

We got a call early in the day - Jill was calling because we weren’t out to meet the tour - the company we booked through hadn’t conveyed that we were due out at 8:30AM rather than 10AM. It was 8:10 and she was being proactive. As we rushed getting ready, we were crossing our fingers for a good day.

Despite our rocky start (Our fault, not hers), this turned out to be one of the best tours we’ve been on and we’ve been traveling and cruising for almost 20 years.

Jill is a native of Hawai’i and it was evident as she took us through the history and background of the island as we traveled to Volcano National Park. She was very friendly and positive, engaged and informative. We met her Husband (who owns the company with her) and he was very nice as well.

Their tour bus was in excellent shape and she continually took care of us throughout the visit, making sure we were well hydrated and reasonable opportunities for nature breaks. We hiked about a mile and a half in the park to get to the crater and she had an excellent discussion with us on the native flora, the geology and the Volcanic and human history of the island, with some reference to local mythology thrown in.

The park itself was wonderful – a changing landscape based on the recent eruption and plate changes, which Jill explained well and put a very human face on (so we understood the impact to the Island and residents).

We spent some time at the visitors center, stopped to see the steam vents and another view of the crater, then off to lunch at a local Orchid Farm, which was beautiful – and had a nice lunch (sandwiches, Potato or Sweet Potato chips and drinks). All were fresh ands very tasty.

We headed back to Hilo with a stop off at a local Chocolate factory and store (sampled cookies and coffee) and then by the beautiful waterfront park before heading back to the ship. The tour had taken about 7 hours but went by very quickly – it was well paced, but leisurely so everyone young and old was able to keep up without being winded. Lots of excellent opportunities for photos too.

I highly recommend Mauka Makai Adventures – they were excellent, professional and personable. The small tour group gave a great opportunity for questions and exchange. I will use them again given an opportunity!

Tour was done with a small crews, carrying about 10 to 12 people. The tour guide is local and very knowledgeable not only on everything concerning volcanoes but also the local area, customs and great places for continued exploring. We started at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and got a good overview on what had happened during the latest eruption. Our hike through a safe part of the park was garnered with lots of explanations and interesting bits and facts. Lunch was really good in a nice setting in an orchid plantation. The orchids are certified to be taken onboard the ship or an airplane. We followed up with a chocolate factory and a black sand beach. Always plenty of rest stops and time to slow down for interesting facts about Big Island. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend tour and Mauka to Makai. Online booking was easy and followed up with a tour reminder via Mail. Great service also here.

We were lucky enough to have Jill as our tour guide of Hilo and the surrounding area. She was so lovley to get to know through out the day, we felt like we were apart of her family. She kept us well fed and the sandwiches are huge! Her knowledge as a local was outstanding and i loved hearing the traditional stories around the volcano and the island. The tour was great and id recomend checking out the lava tubes if you get a chance! An amazing addition to our honeymoon, thank you both so much xo

We had a terrific tour with Josh visiting Volcano National Park. The park had just reopened, and lots of areas were closed. Josh skillfully navigated to the open areas to show us as much as possible. He provided informative descriptions to build on the views. And he took us to a lava tube in another location since the one in the park was closed. We would highly recommend booking a tour with Josh.
