So listen, this place is a winner! Very local style dining with a ton of selections! Good service, fast, friendly, better than average diner food. If you are a tourist try the sumo saimin! Take a picture! Food in Hilo is pricey but not more expensive then anywhere else in Hilo. Try this place you will love it!

We had pancakes, eggs, bacon, and a breakfast burrito. It was typical dinner food. It was a good price and service was very attentive. The coconut syrup was not much more subtle than I thought it would be. We wanted to eat here because it is a local staple. I don't think we will rest there again.

We had brunch here one day during our stay in Hilo. This is basically a diner - lots of options for food choices, large portions and reasonable prices. We enjoyed it here. I had a huge stack of pancakes, some eggs and sausage - yum. My boyfriend had a teryaki plate that was also good. Easy to recommend.

Our first visit to The Big Island of Hawai'i, friends introduced us to Ken's House of Pancakes when we picked up mutual friends from a cruise ship in Hilo. As I am gluten intolerant, I was skeptical about the fare, but needn't have worried. The menu was eclectic and fulsome. While some long-menued eateries mean mediocre or frozen fare if you go off the Special of the Day", this is not the case. The 24 hour cycle is always bustling and the food is excellent. We visited twice and the plates varied from salads to liver (and onion and bacon), as well as omelettes, pancakes and wraps. On The second visit, my soup-fan husband gloried in the large bowl of home-made turkey and gumbo, and I spied the section for folks 1 to 101, of portions with only one scoop of potatoes, meat, salad etc. on the other end of the scale, there are "sumo" dishes that are accompanied by bell-ringing announcements.....which draw the innate friendly hubbub into a party of good cheer.

Ken's is a proper diner with friendly staff and lots to choose from. Open 24hrs with tasty offerings and big portions. Went here for breakfast and dinner and on both occasions had a great meal. Set rotation of daily specials as well other specials up on the whiteboard are worth a try.
