Our first visit to The Big Island of Hawai'i, friends introduced us to Ken's House of Pancakes when we picked up mutual friends from a cruise ship in Hilo. As I am gluten intolerant, I was skeptical about the fare, but needn't have worried. The menu was eclectic and fulsome. While some long-menued eateries mean mediocre or frozen fare if you go off the Special of the Day", this is not the case. The 24 hour cycle is always bustling and the food is excellent. We visited twice and the plates varied from salads to liver (and onion and bacon), as well as omelettes, pancakes and wraps. On The second visit, my soup-fan husband gloried in the large bowl of home-made turkey and gumbo, and I spied the section for folks 1 to 101, of portions with only one scoop of potatoes, meat, salad etc. on the other end of the scale, there are "sumo" dishes that are accompanied by bell-ringing announcements.....which draw the innate friendly hubbub into a party of good cheer.
