“CLOSED”

We went there today and there was yellow tape across the door and two signs saying that the restaurant had to close but at some undetermined time it would reopen. I wonder if they didn't pass their inspection?? it looks like a dive bar but wanted to go there based on recommendations. oh well.

“A fine diner”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

This is a diner with the wide variety on the menu you expect in diners. While the chicken teryaki sandwich I had the first night was not great, the chopped steak I had the second time was very tasty. Service was uniformly excellent, even though they had quite a crowd. It's not a fancy place, but you can get a good meal here.

“anything you want”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

Their menu is very extensive and the place was packed although we did not have to wait to be seated. Staff was busy but attentive to our needs. The food was acceptable. Not an upscale place but more like a Denny's on steroids.

“Local food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

Looking for saimen or loco moco? Breakfast? Ken's is a local institution (seems like it has always been there). Yes, the food can be greasy and laden with carbs, but sometimes that is what you crave. Portions large and prices fair. The service can be a little slow and thsi is definitely not a fancy place.

“Should be called house of syrup”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

Ken's is a landmark in Hilo and has been around forever (which is apparent in the parking lot accessibility and current traffic). The staff is very friendly and usually tend to your needs promptly. The pancakes here are good but the show stopper are the selection of syrups, half a dozen to choose from. While it is not my favorite spot for breakfast, they serve tons more than breakfast, I will go back for my favorite syrup, boysenberry!!
