We have been coming to the Big Island for 20 years, but never stayed in downtown Hilo. This was a great first time in an authentic Hawaiian style home. Several relaxing seating areas, both inside and out, with interesting collectibles all around the house. The Hilo shops and restaurants are fairly closeby, and always interesting. Ditto the farmer's market (best/biggest on Wed. & Sat.). This was an excellent start to our 12 days on the island.
This guesthouse provides what we believe is a perfect example of the real Hawaii - laid back, very inviting and beautiful. The property is very clean and comfortable. The owner is the definition of aloha - how to live with joy and respect. Mahalo Kawehi.
This was our fourth visit with Kawehi's. Obviously, we wouldn't stay anywhere else in Hilo. She's a wonderful host, her house is very comfortable and well equipped, with so many different options for lounging around. These visits always add a terrific dimension to our Big Island trips. Thanks, Kawehi, for making your lovely home available to travellers. P.S. If you are in Hilo on a Tuesday, try to take in the Hawaii music night at the Hilo Town Tavern.
The living space and kitchen are screened, open air to a great porch with table and a lush, enclosed garden. The bedroom has a small air conditioner that while noisy does keep it cool. The house is filled with Hawaiian memorabilia, which those who prefer Ikea-style minimalism might not like. I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and had a couple of reactions but 9 times out of 10, I react to something in new places, including minimalist decors. But what made this a unique experience was our charming hostess Kawehi, a 70-something powerhouse who knows her history and was beyond helpful, delivering avocados and fruit upon request, regaling us with interesting tidbits about the island, and filled with an energetic enthusiasm that was catchy. If you want an authentic Hawaiian home in a real Hawaiian neighborhood with an authentic Hawaiian host, you will not be disappointed.
Our stay at Hale Kawehi was perfect and magical. Kawehi is the absolute perfect host and we only wish we had stayed here longer. Everything in the beautiful guesthouse is exactly as advertised…actually I have to say…it’s even better than advertised because you really need to be there to experience the beauty of it in person. My partner and I felt so welcomed by Kawehi’s energy and felt like we had total privacy. We had fresh croissants every day we were there, stocked refreshments and treats, which just added an even more welcoming and homey feel to our stay. Absolutely everything you could need is included in this guesthouse, from a firepit/bbq to cook on, to a full kitchen, which we cooked in. The openness of the floor plan and then sliding doors is spectacular, with the wraparound decks, seating, and garden. We felt totally safe and secure. The location is perfect, close and accessible to everything. We can’t say enough positive things about our stay here. We definitely hope to return to the Big Island and to Hilo, and we most certainly hope to stay again at Hale Kawehi.
We were welcomed with freshly made croissants and the day just got better. Kawehi left notes and menus of restaurants to enjoy and hints about other things to do there. She went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. For a small fee she did our laundry!
The place is spacious and welcoming. We had friends over to BBQ, used her equipment to spend time at the beach and loved every minute of our stay. Yes, there were noises at night. Our friends said they were local frogs - all part of the island life. She does provide ear plugs if you need them. Fans and AC were wonderful too.
A comfy, campy house perfectly located in Hilo for exploration of all that the east coast offers! Close to downtown, easy access to the main roads, and beautifully quiet for relaxing. A/C in the bedroom was hardly needed, and the cool breezes and fans throughout the house were perfect. It kinda felt like living in a tree house. Wonderful.
