“Truly Local”
Reviewed August 8, 2013 via mobile

Always nice when traveling to experience local food and this was no exception. Didn't appear to have many tourists. Tried the wing special with oyster sauce and tripe stew with both excellent (a bit salty). However, the Lilikoi Chiffon Pie was stunning....certainly made the meal. Ths is truly a down home and local treat.

“A Welcome Addition to Hilo Dining Scene”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Hawaiian Style Café is located right across the street from Big Island Candies in a new strip mall that is also where Takenoko Sushi and Miyo's are located. We went their for lunch and there was a waiting list to be seated, which is very unusual for Hilo (normally you don't have to wait for a table). The restaurant is very clean, the décor is pleasing, and the diners looked they were all enjoying their meals. I ordered the pulehu (smoked grilled) ribs on top of a big bowl of saimin garnished with plenty of fishcake, omelet, bok choy. I'm a petite Asian middle-aged female who's a hearty eater, and I finished off the ribs but left half the saimin noodles behind (ate all of the garnishes, however). So yes the portions are huge, even for me.

My husband ordered a cheeseburger and a "small" serving of stew luau. He said the luau stew was just as good as the one served at Heeia Pier on Oahu. Even if you are not familiar with local Hawaiian cuisine, please give this place a try. There are plenty of items that you will recognize, and the friendly servers are very informed and will answer any questions that you may have about the menu.

“Happy We Found This Place”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

While scouring Hilo for new places to eat we found the Hawaiian Style Cafe. When in East Hawaii the Hilo Hawaiian is home base. To find the HSC so close made it all the better. We liked it so much that we stopped in for several meals while in Hilo. Each time we ate there I had the seared Mahi and each time it was prepared to perfection. My wife has never been a big seared Mahi fan but the way they prepare it her caused her to begin to rethink her position. For one thing, each piece of fish is sliced fairly thin leaving much less of a rare section in the middle. And the sauce they put on the Mahi compliments the fish perfectly. Liked the place so much I bought a tee shirt to wear back home.
Friendly people, good food and a great location. What more can you ask for?!
