Just a regular visitor centre selling the type of merchandise you would expect for the attraction. There is a telescope for the public to use, to view the sun or stars should you find yourself there late at night

Rented a 4 wheel drive from Harpers and took a trip up Mauna Kea. We estimate this was $800 less than travelling with a tour company.

A brilliant experience.

The visitor centre staff/rangers are very helpful. You take the trip up to the Visitor Centre and take 30-40 mins to acclimatise to the altitude.

The next step is over a four mile stretch of stable but loose gravel road with friendly rangers looking out for you at every stage.

We took the trip in the morning and avoided the sunset/sunrise crowds. The Keck observatory is open to visitors before 4pm and worth a look in.

The best part was the walk up to the summit which we had to ourselves.

An unforgettable experience.

We went at night for the star gazing program. The program is conducted free of charge and is open to everybody, no reservations needed! Volunteers have several telescopes set up for viewing. We saw the rings of Saturn. Bring warm clothes it gets very cold. They sell sweatshirts but they are pricey.

Not only did i go to the visitors center but i also went all the way up mauna kea! This completely voids the warentee on the rental car by the way.....so if your car breaks down you owe someone alot of money. It was like driving into heaven going up there. Billions of dollars worht of star gazing equiptment is up there and fun to look at as well. Reminds me of what mars would be liek if the weather was perfect.

We watched the sunset from the summit. There was no snow yet, so our rental car made it safely to the top! Then we stargazed at the visitor center and drank hot chocolate which they sold there. A wonderful date.
