I've stayed at a few hostels around the Big Island, and Hilo Bay Hostel was one of the best ones! I went there 2 days before my reservation, drenched in rain, and Terry the manager made sure I felt right at home. He made the checking-in process as easy as possible and set me up with a cup of tea =) He's very service-oriented, and really works with you to make sure you have a great stay. The hostel has cool decor (wood paneling, vintage posters/signs), and the bathrooms, kitchen, and rooms were clean. There's free wifi and free parking across the street, and the hostel is in walking distance to many stores and restaurants. Everyone I've met here, both guests and staff, has been incredibly nice. They do lock up the kitchen at 945pm and turn off the lights in the lobby by 10pm, so plan accordingly! I would definitely stay again.

If I had known how nice Hilo Bay Hostel is I would have planned my trip to stay longer. The common area is lovely and spacious, everything nice and clean. Very friendly staff and a nice crowd staying there (which was a pleasant change after drunk college students in Waikiki hostels). In the bunk rooms the bottom bunks are double size which was a very pleasant surprise. The only downside I found staying there after having previously been in a rainforest environment was the street noise, so I would recommend earplugs to ensure you sleep well.

Room Tip: If you book early ask for a bottom bunk bed. I travelled in March and it wasn't busy. If you can...

I travel a lot to different island for business. I have stayed at many hostels and this place is still affordable even with the slight increase. Its clean, comfortable and very nostalgic. where can you go on any island and have FREE parking, FREE WiFi, a Kitchen to prepare your own meals, a clean bathroom, a common area and meet interesting people from different parts of the world.
I have read a disturbing post from Lorikeet's on the hostel being infested with critters. No matter where you go on any of the islands you will find roaches and ants everywhere. HOW RUDE! Expensive hotels has critters too....IF you didn't like the place you could have just said you were unhappy.
I stayed there quite often on business trips and would rather stay there than any of the hotels in Hilo. Thank you to the staff of Hilo Bay Hostel for providing a wonderful lodging hostel.

Room Tip: Private rooms gives you more privacy and if available request the quieter side.

The Hilo Bay Hostel is indeed in a central location. But this means, if your room is facing the street, you have to have an either very tight sleep or earplugs. It almost doesn't matter if the window is open or closed. Very noisy. There is only one shower room for girls and one toilet room, where one of the toilets is not even behind doors, so there isn't actual privacy. If you are taller, you have to bend down in the shower to wash your hair. The water is not hot enough and the pressure for warm water is poor. There is not even a bin in the bathroom. Cleanliness is average, as one reviewer said - showers could need more attention, room too was kind of dusty partly. There is no chance to hang some clothes up in the room. If you have a private room, there is a little fridge with complementary water and pops. Lonely planet said, it has almost no failure but this is just not true. If you want to check in later than nine, of have to call and can only do so if you have a private room. When you fly to Kona, make sure your plane arrives no later than 5.30/6 pm, it's quite a drive.

Hilo is a sweet, little town with some of the old Hawaii feeling still evident. But, we don't have much to offer in terms of affordable, overnight accomodation. Between worn-out Billy's and the luxury and expense of the Shipman mansion the only reasonable for singles (can choose dorm or private room) or families (ensuite private room and bath) is the Hilo Bay Hostel. Once there, no car is needed but, free parking if you have one. Corner of Waianuenue and Keawe can be a bit noisy during the school rush hour... the intermediate and high school is up the street 4 blocks and when an ambulance passes on its way to the hospital 1.5 mile away. But, the best deal is the open kitchen which allows you to beat the lousy and overpriced Hilo restaurants. Shop for your groceries a few blocks up Keawe and cook your own in the hostel. Warning: don't opt for the 'co-ed dorm'... last time there, a sleezy guy was jerking off all night! Yeech!

Room Tip: Inside rooms might be quieter but will be darker.

The location of this hostel is really good-right in town Hilo, walking distance to market, restaurants, etc.... Hostel was clean for the most part-showers could have used a little attention. Too many long term people for me. It's understandable in a place that has a short tourist season, but there did not seem to be a lacking in tourists. I should have kicked in the extra for a private room. Didn't sleep well with 7 others in the dorm.

We spent 1 night, family of 4, in the private room with ensuite. The room appeared to be recently redone, nicely decorated, beautiful bathroom with shower. Friendly owner who checked us in. The street out front is busy, however being a Sunday evening it wasn't too noisy. Great location, free parking in a lot just diagonal to the hostel. Definitely would recommend this hostel for an economical stay in Hilo.
