a beautiful spot to sun and swim! My husband even came face to face with a turtle when he took a dive in

Nice snorkeling with a big tortoise and lots of fish in a protected cove. It looked more difficult from the land than it was once in the water.

We went to this beach on a Hawaiian state holiday, so there was a mix of locals and tourists there. Everyone was very nice, and there were no conflicts, even though things were a little crowded. The beach itself was nice, but not amazing. That said, Hilo is a tad rocky, so for Hilo side it was pretty amazing. There was a near shore reef that the kids could snorkel on which had a large variety of fish, and enough to keep everyone entertained for quite some time. We were there before 9, and left after 3, and other than being tired, everyone could have stayed quite a while longer, from the 7 year old to her grandmother. There is lots of shade available, so pasty white boys like myself can hang in safety.

This is a pretty nice hidden black sand beach near Hilo. It's very small but we went on a Saturday morning and it was relatively quiet. Good place to snorkel and spend a little time. There are quite a few tour buses that come through to see the sea turtles in an adjacent pond but not much of a bother.

We went on a weekday in May when it wasn't so busy - got there early to grab a nice shady place to park and claimed our place on the beach (careful - that black sand gets HOT!). We snorkeled a lot here and the fish were pretty colourful and plentiful, but the highlight here was seeing a HUGE sea turtle. He was probably 3 - 4 feet long and just minding his own business when we happened upon him. Definitely the highlight of our day here. The water's a bit rough in spots, but overall, a lovely spot.
