We stayed one night on a trip around the Big Island. The front desk and the bartender were very helpful in providing info for our foray into Hilo. The Merrie Monarch festival was just getting started, but we were too early for the good competition and too late to get tickets for the best. The hotel room was large with a king bed, small refer, but no hair dryer. One was supplied when we called. The room was clean with a balcony overlooking the parking area. The only drawback was the noise from the birds and frogs at night!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an ocean view.

My son and I stayed here for 6 wonderful days. This hotel is a lovely hotel. It's very large. The staff is awesome! I stayed here for 6 nights on the 3rd morning I had an issue with my remote not working on the T.V. the staff was all over getting it fixed. The housekeeping staff is over the top good! The sheets were crisp the towels were not worn or tattered. It's a simple choice. This is not a big name hotel nor is it a chain which can call upon huge advertising funds. We used this hotel as a base camp for trips all over the island. They have onsite laundry which I got a lot of use out of. This hotel is safe and in a safe neighborhood. I have traveled all over with my children and consider safety a top priority when picking a hotel, I had no issues and let my son go and come as he wanted to..Safe, Clean, Great Location. The choice is clear leave the big resorts sitting in the desert come to Hilo and connect with the real people of Hawaii. Love the Castle Hilo Resort!!!

Very good hotel on the rainforest side of the big island of Hawaii. Everything was very nice, absolutely good quality in every respect. The big resorts are on the other side of the island which is the desert side. I wasn't expecting the hotel to be this nice, but I found it to be equivalent to or a notch better than a Hilton. The location is right next to very beautiful parks right on the oceanfront, so lots of beautiful places to walk or jog. The breakfast buffet was excellent and extensive. Lots of great fresh Hawaii fruit. Very good hotel overall, and a good place from which to get out and see the sights on this side of the big island.

Room Tip: My room faced the ocean-- a beautiful view.

Nicely decorated room, comfortable bed, good towels and bedding, spacious, good A/C, small fridge, no microwave
Great view from our 6th floor lanai of the bay and Coconut Island
Liliuokalani Japanese Garden next door
Staff was excellent, helpful and friendly
Ample free parking

AWESOME Seafood and Prime Rib buffet includes wine & beer all you can eat and drink, better than the great ones in Las Vegas

WiFi in comfortable spacious lobby worked great, In room WiFi additional charge
Had to request hair-dryer, iron etc., no big deal

Extended our checkout time, which gave us enough time to fit in another hike, come back to the room and shower and pack.

High price in comparison to similar hotels on the mainland but there isn’t much to choose from in the area.

Traveller reviews and comments from friends were rather misleading, they suggested staying on the Kona side as Hilo was colder, rainy, frogs chirping all night were annoying, the town is small and old and there isn't much to do. They were SO WRONG. We expected a small rural town with minimal services but discovered a great community with lots of shops and service, grocery stores, parks etc., population is over 40,000 and lots more homes in the surrounding areas.

If you like the outdoors there is lots to see and do in the area. It was cooler around 75 and it did rain, mostly at night, day time showers were short bursts which did not impact activities, the Coqui frogs are surprisingly loud but just at night and we couldn't hear them if the lanai door was closed.

Wish we had stayed longer, 4+ days would have been great, much preferred Hilo to the Kona and Waikoloa areas.

Room Tip: Stay on the upper floors, great view

This hotel is a holdover from the 1950's and somewhat tired but it is still a comfortable place to stay. They have updated the rooms and although the furniture is nice, it is anything but tropical. The oceanview rooms are worth any additional cost. The view from the balcony is lovely. The restaurant has good buffet dinners on the weekends. There are some interesting things to do nearby within a short walk. Lots of tour groups come here. There are laundry facilities which are an added bonus.

Room Tip: Ask for an oceanview room.

This hotel is exactly what you would expect for the price: clean, quiet, and convenient. It's a good hotel to stay at if you arrive on a later flight into Hilo or want a jumping off point for exploring this side of the island. The only downside was the large number of tour groups that were there when we were.

Stayed here with our toddler - good accommodation but not outstanding. Restaurant nice. Location alright if you have a rental car otherwise a bit of a walk to town. Wifi is only available for free in the lobby which is a bit of a pain when you have a small child to try and keep amused. Would stay here again.
