Just returned from the Hilo Hawaiian and I was impressed. I wasn't expecting much after reading some of the reviews below, but it was certainly worth the money we paid. There are not many places to choose from on the east side of the Big Island, and if I was to return, I would not hesitate to stay here again. It's not a resort, but it is a nice place to lay the head after traveling the island.

We had a Junior Suite facing the "Banyan Park"(ing lot!), but the ocean view rooms (which my family had) had outstanding views of Mauna Kea (if the clouds cooperate) and Hilo Bay. The rooms were clean, the maids nice, but nothing was extraordinary. The suite had a fridge, stove, sink, and microwave oven and came with plates, utensils, and pots/pans. Parking felt secure, but I was afraid of losing the keys to the room all day long (not being the magnetic strip kind, it's not so easy just to replace it).

Initially we were going to stay in a BnB in Volcano, but decided to switch to Hilo after all the sulphur warnings and having a young infant. We are glad we did. Just north of Hilo is beautiful with the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and a number of waterfalls (Akaka Falls in particular). Hilo, although far from Kona, seemed to be perfectly situated to see most of the attractions of the Big Island.

We had booked a room with an Ocean View. This was an excellent choice. 1 night was free if you stay 5 nights.
Our room was large and clean and we had a balcony with a view of Coconut Island and Mauna Kea. Every morning we watched the sun rise over Mauna Kea, it was so beautiful! This hotel has the best view in Hilo.
The room had a fridge and coffee machine.
We didn't use the pool as we were on the road all day.

I stayed there on March 23rd. It was as expected for an average hotel room. Clean but outdated but then again IT'S HILO. Consider it part of the charm of Hilo My biggest concern was that it was going to be dirty, dingy and or moldy. It was not. I didn't feel uncomfortable with the room. Service was friendly. I would not have a problem with coming back here again. I am interested is seeing how the hotel next door will look after their renovations. The biggest concern was the hotel uses old fashioned keys for the doors and they didn't work very well.

The Good - The hotel has a great location near many great sites. Waterfalls, black beaches, snorkeling coves, Observatory and other activities are nearby via car. This hotel also features onsite laundry if you need to wash clothes. The hotel staff were VERY friendly and accessible.

The Bad - The hotel is a bit dated with a desperately needed refresh of the decor. It is a hotel that we’ve stayed in a while that actually had the old key/lock system instead of magnetic card reader . The restaurant buffets were less than stellar although a few good items were on the menu. The swimming pool was a bit small but the island park across the street made up for it. There are various areas in the park to swim and play in even for small kids.

We stayed here as felt kona too far too visit volcano and return in a day and we were right ,it;s position is ideal but thats about all!!!!

had paid extra for superior room as thought others might be little basic and was very disappointed to find had not got a balcony when it appeared only a handfull of rooms had not .Asked at reception to be moved and person seemed to find it difficult to understand what I was asking for kept saying no we were in correct room and hotel was full so we could not move----she was very unhelpful and as we were only booked in for 2 nights we let it go but do not honestly believe every room was full???
thoroughly recommend kens pancake house to eat in just up the road ---had been travelling for 2 wks and this was defo best for value and choice .ate there both nights --excellant!!!!!
