“good location clean quiet”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Visited with my son who was registering for classes at UoH. Compared to other places we saw on the island it was much nicer and had excellent views. We did not eat at the hotel so I can not speak for the restaurant. Our room was outdated but clean and comfortable. We rarely saw or heard other guests and staff were friendly. The rates were very inexpensive so I was not expecting much but needed something close to the school. It turned out far better than expected.

Room Tip: Ocean view can not be beat.

There are not a lot of hotels in Hilo. The Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is a short drive from the airport and is fronted by a road lined with named banyan trees. The banyan tree right in front of the hotel was planted by Babe Ruth The back of the hotel faces the bay. We took a cab from the airport and checked in. We got a room with two double beds. The room was clean and tidy but very, very tired. The room definitely needed an update and a face lift. After checking into our room, we made our way to the lounge. The prices were reasonable and the staff was very friendly. We had dinner in the dining room and the selection was varied and we were all pleased with our choices. The following night we had dinner in the lounge and we were pleasantly surprised. The portions were large and well presented. The prices were very reasonable. The hotel is next to Liliuokalani Gardens which are well worth a stroll. The hotel is about a 30 minute walk into town. The walk there was very warm so we took a cab back to the hotel. The pool was too cold for swimming. We enjoyed our stay and found it to be a good value.

Had a room facing the bay. The view was nice, and we saw sea turtles just off the hotel's lawn one day. As other have said, the furniture and decor is starting to look worn and dated.

The staff were nice. Beers in the bar were a bit expensive. I didnt have noise problems like others.

My biggest complaint is 10$ per day for wireless (if you want it in the room, as opposed to in the lobby where it's free). Really!? In this day and age!? C'mon guys.

As written by many others, there aren't a lot of options in Hilo. On our second visit to the town we decided to drive around and ask for prices to find a place for one night. Most of the hotels are in the same area together and this one was the best one of the bunch and we got an ok price.

The room looked better than I was expecting, but it was so noisy that if you don't get a good night sleep it doesn't matter what it looks like. We had a room overlooking the water but there was a group of drunk people swimming a lot of the night and we could hear everything.

All the comments and reviews about this hotel are accurate. It is a hotel that has shown its age, the hotel does not spend a lot of money to keep it looking top notch. However, it does look a lot better then all the other nearby locations. The rooms are fine and clean and people here are friendly.

The room walls and ceiling are all paper thin. You can here everything around you - people using the bathroom upstairs, you can overhear peoples conversation in the halls and at about 5am we heard a jet take off from Hilo airport.

We chose not to eat here because we didn't hear any good reviews about the restaurant and the prices were very steep.

After reading some of the reviews for Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, I was somewhat hesitant to stay here. There aren't many other options in Hilo, though. I booked two nights, and in the end, I would say I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, the hotel does look a little bit older, especially in the hallways. The room itself really didn't look that bad! It was clean, the beds were comfortable, and were close enough to the lobby to be able to access the free wireless internet. There was a balcony that overlooked the banyan trees on the road. The front desk staff was very friendly. I also liked that we were able to walk along the shoreline trails nearby. You can get some especially beautiful views of the sunset, along with downtown Hilo and Mauna Kea.

Stayed at this hotel, which was blocked, for a conference I attended. The room was pretty large and the view of the garden in front was really nice. Didn't get to experience the restaurant or the coffee cafe/bar in the lobby, but it looked promising. The view from the hotel of HIlo Bay and the bridge was really amazing! The room was clean and there were many movie options, even new releases still in theatres. The only thing my husband and I disliked was the soap provided. It wasn't anything special and just felt as though it would melt away quickly. Also, the bed could really use more new, fluffier pillows. The parking lot up top could use a renovation. The spaces were so small that if you had a regular size or large car, you couldn't really get in and out of your car without banging the one next to you. The parking spaces downstairs were much larger and easy to access. Overall, a good stay for the price! Just need a few changes.
