“Nice View from Hotel and Clean”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Stayed at this hotel, which was blocked, for a conference I attended. The room was pretty large and the view of the garden in front was really nice. Didn't get to experience the restaurant or the coffee cafe/bar in the lobby, but it looked promising. The view from the hotel of HIlo Bay and the bridge was really amazing! The room was clean and there were many movie options, even new releases still in theatres. The only thing my husband and I disliked was the soap provided. It wasn't anything special and just felt as though it would melt away quickly. Also, the bed could really use more new, fluffier pillows. The parking lot up top could use a renovation. The spaces were so small that if you had a regular size or large car, you couldn't really get in and out of your car without banging the one next to you. The parking spaces downstairs were much larger and easy to access. Overall, a good stay for the price! Just need a few changes.

We love this place! In the perfect spot right on the ocean. The rooms are great and you feel like you are at home. with the bay and Mauna kea as a backdrop you are in heaven. Even on a rainy day the magic and life of Hawaii is truly paradise. My heart remains in Hilo.

Room Tip: Choose a room the faces the ocean and the mountain

Only stayed one night in a room overlooking the harbour. This is an old hotel with rooms that need some serious renovations. Nothing seriously wrong, just old, worn. Clean enough, and the staff were good, and the lobby area and restaurant were both lovely. Glad I didn't have a longer stay though.

Room Tip: Nice views from the harbour side rooms.

Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is an ageing fine lady with a bag surprise.
The hotel is probably 1965 vintage built to a very high standard of the day. Since then the hotel has been well maintained, standards are comfortably quite high. Having said this there are no newer hotels in Hilo that I know of, sort of like the shortage of sand beaches on this island.
This hotel is in an incredibly beautiful location, in fact it is adjacent to two of the top Trip Advisor Hilo attractions Queen Lili’uokalani Gardens and Coconut Island. Also the street is aptly named Banyon Drive. The Banyon trees are something to behold. You could not ask for a nicer location.
The front desk manager was most friendly and accommodating at check-in. The hotel policy of room operation is low cost. In room there are only Styrofoam cups, 4 day sheet change but towels are daily, it works fairly well. Wifi is free in the lobby, but $10.60 daily "in room charge".
Discount coupons are given for the expensive in house restaurant, which we choose to not use.
The big surprise is lax or non-existent hotel security Drug activity was seen takeing place in the semi underground parkade in clear view of ccd cameras. Reporting to the evening desk clerk, I got brushed off (19 March 2013). There were also loud people shouting in the corridor after midnight 4th floor 19 March 2013. Clearly the hotel needs to investigate its own in house security service.
I stayed in the hotel 18 ~21 march 2013.

Room Tip: sk for a view of Coconut Island

We stayed here one night recently with a tour group. The decor is so outdated and needs immediate attention. Our bathroom had mold in the shower/tub area and hair was on the floor. The bed linens were thread bare and the bed/pillows were not comfortable. I guess what bothered me most was the nickle and dime bit with charging extra for the basics, safe, internet, etc. Meeting Uncle Billy down the street and talking with him over lunch was a highlight.

Great location. Probably used to be great. Took 30 minutes to find a parking spot. Had 2 rooms and the reservation was screwed up. Buffet way over priced. Room needed updates 20 years ago. I know there aren't a lot of options in Hilo but it was a let down to say the least.

The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is not fancy but provides the basic features (clean room, attractive lobby, dining room, bar, pool) you would expect in any hotel. We had no problem with this solid hotel. Its location is very good for visits to the Volcano National Park in one direction and to the Botanical Garden and Akaka Falls in the other direction. The hotel is located on road lined with huge Banyan trees planted in the 30s by Babe Ruth, Amelia Earhart and other notables and it is close to the Liliuokalani Gardens.

Two pieces of information. The hotel is designed with some protection from the tsunamis that periodically impact the Hilo area. The lobby is wide open to allow the water to pass through. When the warning come guests are directed to the third floor. Also Hilo restricts the height of the hotel to the height of palm trees.

Room Tip: Our recommendation is to ask for a room overlooking the water and try to get the breakfast buffet in...
